OK, but what about the ellipsoids towards the center. How do you accurately try to control those shades towards the middle. Try doing that with a pigment ink printer and see what happens with just CMY and a few nozzles and eliminate grain.

Guys, when you look at the photo of the sealed printhead bag in Keith's (as always) very detailed article

http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/setting-up-your-new-pro-300/

as far as I can see (on the small sticker on the right) it is Canon part number F454008 and that's a QY6-0085 ;)
(I double checked with my spare)

in that case @mikling guessed right

The PRO-300 uses the same printhead as the PRO-10

Many thanks Keith !
Here's the full res version of the one in the set-up article FYI

As @mikling told Sunday evening this printhead is very sturdy, in 6 or 7 years he knows of one customer who had to replace it because he didn't fill enough ink in the carts.

Worries based on experiences with the PRO-9500(II) seem to be overdone.
In hindsight hoarding 9500's was a bad idea, the successor was better as I discovered rather late.
So I won't stock PRO-10's.
Spare printheads will stay available for many years.
And in case the waste pads are full (again maybe a myth from old days, I never experienced it) probably the Russian hacked service tools will work (will try it on my second Maxify some day, need it first to test inks).

At last it has been proven refilling and changing all carts together reduces ink flushing and thus postponing this event.

Please allow me a question that might be a little off-topic. What is "The Russian hack"? Resetting from service mode with the newest service tool? Re-flashing the EEPROM? Or?

Thanks for your immediate intervention, you are the specialist in this matter.
It was my impression more recent service tools claiming the can reset the PRO-10 and the Maxify (among others) are sold on eBay.

I can be wrong ...

Yesterday I replayed the livestream with Mike and José. Naturally, most of the talk was about the Pro300.
BTW I noticed that you were online.. ;)

No doubt, this new machine has amazing electronic capabilities inherited from the Prograff line, but my hunch is that the improvements over the Pro10, regarding image quality or ink consumption, will be very marginal. Reading between the lines, both José and Mike think likewise
For the average user, who doesn’t knows/care about refill, it makes sense to get the new Pro300 for the new features ( 90 cmt, paper length, no wide margins, etc). Besides, in a few weeks, Pro10s will start to disappear from the shelves, so there will be no choice for new buyers.
From a refiller point of view, the new machine has zero appeal to me. We gain practically nothing and we loose refill capability ( disabling ink monitoring is the last thing I’d do )
I gather that most regulars here will share more or less my point of view. Well, maybe @The Hat would consider buying one if Canon had named it Pro-3D instead of Pro-300. :p

I was previously thinking about purchasing the Epson P900 printer or even the Canon Pro 1000 but afterwards I decided to buy the P800: proven technology despite the MB/PB switch and refillable cartridges available or firmware hack so all cartridges stay full at all time. I already have an well maintained second hand P800 and was surprised by its printing quality even with aftermarket (Inktec Powerchrom K3), much beter than my previous Pro 3880.

What is it making this difference actually - apparently directly visible - gloss - gamut - granularity of the 4pl droplets or ?

With the firmware hack you are in a comparable situation as with the PRO-300 and disabled ink monitoring - something I suppose is not possible with the P900.
With your Epson experience I would stay with the P800 too.

But what makes you buy a second one ?
