Leaking cartridges

I use the German method of refilling which in my experience is largely successful. However, I have found that odd cartridges (about 2%) leak after filling. I realise that this is a symptom of air getting into the cartridge but from where? Has anyone else experienced this? I don't mean leaking due to overfilling. Is it possible that the needle has
pierced the outlet filter thereby allowing air into the the cartridge?

How can you overcome this problem: the hole should be as small as possible (use a awl or pushpin) and if air is inside the cartridge: empty the cartridge by withdawing the ink through the same refill hole and then -with the ink outlet over the ink bottle- blow into the breathing hole with your mouth until all the ink has been forced out of the sponge. I recommend you to press your finger on the ink refill hole to prevent the ink from escaping through this hole sideways and spilling your desk.

Now refill the cartridge again, but let gravity do its work to saturate the sponge. Now the problem should be gone !
