when do you know you need to replace the ink waste pad, while reviewing the manual it says replacement should be done at 7%, when i did a service test print it shows 14.4 %, i'm sure the pad can hold more but at what point should it really be replaced or are there any telltale signs to look for

If I understand it correctly, the printer will give you a warning when you approach 100%, and lock up when you reach 100%. As previous posts have demonstrated, the pad in some printers can handle several hundred % if the printer is reset without cleaning the pad.

I believe that the 7% value is used when the printer is already taken apart by a Canon tech - they are supposed to replace the pad if it is more than 7% full.

Correct... It's the refurb "line" that's used by Canon techs when a unit is received for servicing or replacement.

Hope this helps. Make sure you put some newspaper under the printer if you don't feel like replacing the ink pad. I have one going thousands of pages beyond the reset and it hasn't leaked yet.

I just cleaned a i860 with a D value of 34 and it was a mess. All 4 layers of felt was saturated on the right hand side and probably would have leaked if turned the wrong way.

Wonder how much a new set of felts cost?

Hey Ron,

If it would help and you're up to it, I can send you the parts you'd need to install an external waste ink tank for it, for the cost of postage.

Of course the quid pro-quo would be a photo guide on how you did it ;)

No problem...

Tips for eBay:
- Put your advert together with an HTML editor firsts
- Copy the source (everything between the <body></body> tags) into the HTML section of the listing editor
- Include pictures, lots of pictures.
