I bought an iMac 27"...my goodness.

Well, nor I am a Apple fan pur sang. I just like their designs. And just I have said: There are much better specs for the same money :).
 
Thats pretty much what i think pharmacist :) I actually hate conversations like this because it can be easy to upset a few when price enters the equation. Im glad you like your Imac for what it is, a decent functional computer with good design. :)

I work on Macs for a living, and at home. You don't need an iMac if you already have a good monitor(s) and a ColorMunki Photo. We run a Mac Mini with an SSD pushing 8 Pro-100's simultaneously without a hitch all day long. 16GB of RAM mind you. I'm also listening to streaming audio via iTunes at the same time and it has never crashed in the 4 months since we got it
My MPB at home is almost 5 yrs. old now and it's never been in the shop either. My Eldest daughter's MacBook finally had to be retired because of a HD and battery issue, it was 7 yrs. old
 
OK, yesterday my beauty arrived and I am still installing programs on it. This weekend Windows will be virtually installed on the system for Qimage and a few bunch of programs, to which no equivalent does exist on OS X natively. I was surprised the system was strikingly fast in everything. I used to have a Windows core i7-2600 machine with 16 GB RAM, but this 27 inch iMac with Haswell Core i5 3.2 GHz is really very fast indeed.
 
@pharmacist I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying your new beautiful friend, she sounds like a real slick lady, don’t be put off by the moaner, there’re just jealous that they can’t afford to entertain her up close :pop and that includes me too. :(

Just a word of caution related to speeds you are seeing today. My main computer was blistering fast when I had just Win7, LR & PS Mozilla and Gmail. Then as I added all the other assorted photo processing programs (its pretty well a dedicated Photo Machine) it began to slow to the point where I switched to a SSD for the main Drive. That gave me back a measure of speed that I can actually see.

I am in hopes that in a month when it is settled that you give us a report card on its progress, in the meantime enjoy your new machine, and keep us up to date. I find value in the unfolding of such an event, there are ALWAYS little lessons to be learned.

It may seem to some that this thread so far, has been a tad off colour, I disagree, there have been many interesting points raised for a person to follow up on and learn.

Hi Andrew: I forgot to tell my aforementioned Windows Machine was installed with a Samsung 840EVO SSD on a SATA-6 connection. I already had installed a lot of programs on my iMac now and still running very fast. The iMac also has a SSD disk. OK, let's see what happens in the near future.
 
Well after one month the system is still very fast. Windows 7 starting in virtual box is blistering fast....I don see any speed degradation compared to my old core i7-2600 machine with 16 gigs and ssd disk. :thumbsup.

I have followed the Samsung advice and allocated a 1TB HD for backup, but Windows 7 still refuses to accept the situation. Is manual backup the only solution?

Id suggest using proper backup or drive cloning software rather than windows backup to solve that.
