I am new here & disgusted with printers... Seeking advice...

I used to have an HP printer, I loved the fact you got a printhead on every ink Cartridge, but I hated the fact 3 inks were in one & ink was wasted--I used to refill these --but then moved onto a Canon -loved the individual ink tanks but HATED the pernament Print head cause it always got clogged faithfully and costs $90 to replace. DOES any printer have individual ink tanks WITH the new print head on them, or maybe a HP like this --with the 3 colors in one --that is easily refillable?? It seems all are going to these pernament print heads that cause so much cost to replace when clogged. I do not always buy the company ink --this is far too expensive to do. :/

The only way to have unexpensive printing is to use printer with "pernament Print head" and refill with OEM cartriges using compatible ink that you need to buy in 1liter bottles or simmilar. If you buy ink in small quantities it will be very expensive.

Printheads used in Canon individual cartriges are not designed to last long, for example it can print up to 3000-4500 pages, while "pernament Print head" can last up to 10000 pages and more. "pernament Print head" is easy to clean and maintain. Buil-in print heads are impossible to clean unless you risk to dissasemble whole cartrige often without a way to put it all back together in working state.

Also CIS is a very good ink economy system. But choosing the rihgt one can be tricky cause most of them tend to leak or have ink starvation problems etc.

Thank you for your reply, but I need help understanding, I do not know what the abbreivations stand for, what is "CIS" and you talk of refilling with OEM cartridges --do you mean (only buying canon or HP carridges) and refilling with THEIR INK -being sold in Liter bottles? Where would I buy that??? I was not even aware that canon made printers with individaual print heads on the cartridges, I only knew HP did that, and my older HP like that, always worked perfectly when I needed a picture, no matter how long it sat inbetween printing (Cause of those cartridges WITH the print heads on them), but my canon is worthless with that pernament print head, it never seems to print right, always missing a color here, a color there. Even if I clean the pernament print head to satisfaction, it only seems to work right about a week or 2 and back to missing colors. I can never depend on it for printing correctly -a picuture, for example. I take it --you prefer the Pernament print head, --then you only buy the original ink ?????? And if not, what ink company sells ink that is good enough to NOT clog a pernament print head ???

Always buy the printer at a store and get the 2 year warranty. Then after 18 months of heavy use you can just return it and they will replace it with whatever new model is out.

I own a Canon i960, out of date somewhat, but still one of the best photo inkjets ever made (IMO). It has a "non-perminant" printhead that can be easily REPLACED in about the same amount oftime as replacing an ink cartidge, typically for about 70 US dollars. You might want to look out for these on eBay, they work VERY well!

Although I have switched to Canon, I have refilled my HP printers for a few years and have not had a clog problem. If the ink that you are using is of questionable quality you will, in all probability, also have a similar clog problem with the Canon print head. I have had fading issues with good third party inks, but no clogs.

I also have the canon i960 and I clearly agree the Print head is Extrememly easy to replace, it is the cost of that darn printhead every time it clogs that is upsetting to me. I am so tired of it not working correctly every time my kids need a nice report done for school, I can never count on it to print the right colors. I buy my 3rd party ink at ClickInks.com --they are labled Xprint ink. I seen another canon printer owner gave praise to this ink, so I started buying it. But it always clogs, I have no idea what ink is good for a canon printer to not clog the print head, please PLEASE tell me what YOU use that gives a clean workable print head for months and months ? I used to use Carrot Ink, it was no better I feel. I own the i950 and the i960 Canon printer, they both use the same printhead. I plan on keeping them both for normal printing, but want to add a HP with Printheads ON the cartridge for Printing PHOTOS and school projects. SInce this will only be used Occasionally, I feel safer getting the print head on the cartridge and using ONLY HP ink in it --or occasional filling till --until it clogs.

The three inks that have found favor here are Formulabs from Alotofthings, Hobbicolors, and MIS inks, presumed to be Image Specialist inks. There is also a participant on this NG who sells ink identified clearly as Imaging Specialists inks. The name of his company is Precision Colors and the site link is http://home.eol.ca/~mikling/. His name on this Forum is Mikling. His prices are very competative.

Thank you VERY much for this information! I will be looking up all of these sites and buying from them exclusively. If any of these companies are known being better for Canon ink, or Hp ink , etc, please let me know. Thank you again, I found the one seller on Ebay, his feedback is 99.9 percent! Got to be good ink with a record like that. Thanks again.

Feedback on eBay is normally posted after the seller/buyer receives the goods. A high rating usually means that the item was shipped in a reasonable time frame and the transaction went smoothly - this has nothing to do with the eventual quality of the goods. Clogging issues may arise after the user refills and will not be reflected by feedback.
