This printer does have paper recognition but if I set it to auto, I can't select maximum dpi. I have to select a paper type if I want to use max dpi.
Cant you just turn off the auto paper recognition and use which ever paper your want,
as fotofreek just said Experiment a bit..:)
I can but it only lets me select HP photo papers if I use the maximum dpi setting.

Is the quality of HP printers that bad that using a lower DPI setting would result in very poor quality output?

If you have a need to use the high DPI output setting then just go along with the printer and set it to HP photo paper
and see if the results are satisfactory for you, if not then keep trying other different photo papers till your happy,

Well thats what I would do .. :)

I have not tried using other photo papers with the best setting but I'll try when I have new pictures to print. Thanks for the advice.
