How does CLI-8 ink level detection work? Vary by printer? Erratic?

An earlier thread drifted from the original:
Help with a canon MG5250 - new to this...
to ink detection by CLI-8 based printers.

At that time, I came to the "informed speculation" that my Pro 9000-2 calculated ink level mostly, if not exclusively, on ink droplet counts. Based on further experience, I'm now even more unclear of that, and thought the topic deserved a "fresh thread".

Feedback from owners of CLI-8 based printers with a lot more experience than myself appreciated.

It's not just droplet counts--it also has to count ink that is sucked out of the bottom of the print head during cleanings and who knows how much that is?

By the way, did you test your link? It doesn't seem right.

Well, the print-driver and chip would know. The info I found in the iP4000 service manual provided specific milliliter amounts for all the different degrees of purge/cleanings, and deep cleaning.
* after aaa hours of inactivity, do a clean/purge cycle using 0.bb ml
* after ccc hours of inactivity, do a clean/purge cycle using 0.dd ml
* etc.
That could be converted to inklet droplets. I suppose the specific values would vary for different printers.

By the way, did you test your link? It doesn't seem right.
