How do I know what kind of ink a printer uses?

I've read quite a bit in this forum, and the general consensus seems to be with the IP4500 or the equivalent AIO MP610. I was looking at the MP620 because of it's networking capabilities, and I don't know whether to get it or not because the website states taht the MP620 uses the same kind of refills the MP610 uses. But the some posts in this forum suggests otherwise. How do I know for sure that even this MP610 uses the CLI-8, PGI-5 ink? I'm thinking maybe it's a specific model number?

The printhead is a dead giveaway. I see the part listed as QY6-0075 or QY6-0067

It's listed as being a part for the
* Canon BJ-IP5300
* Canon MP810
* Canon BJ-IP4500
* Canon MP610

You can also see
http://estore.usa.canon.com/webapp/...CompatibilityView?catalogId=10051&pcId=160030

And see a list of printers compatible with the pgi-5bk

PG-220 is listed on the USA canon site as taking the pg-220 and CLI-221 cartridges.
http://estore.usa.canon.com/webapp/...ategory_rn=12051&top_category=12051&pageView=

There presently is no information on these models
PIXMA iP3600 PIXMA iP4600
PIXMA MP620 PIXMA MP980

The claim is they are using the "new" chromalife100+ ink, vs chromalife100 for the color. They test differently but on the new xx-202 papers. The fact is, I have NO clue whether the ink is the same or not. Someone will have to actually take the time to look at it, at at least see how similar the color is to the old ink.

First off, thanks for your detailed and helpful response.

do you mean "MP620 is listed on the USA canon site as taking the pg-220 and CLI-221 cartridges."

I didn't quite understand what you meant by this. By 'the part' do you mean the printhead?

editted: Also, can you give me some good places to find quality ink for refill? :)

1. The Canon website has the specs for all the models.

2. Hobbicolors sold on eBay is good. Also Formulabs sold here: http://www.alotofthings.com/viartshop/products.php?category_id=2

I would stay away from printers taking 220-221/520-521 cartridges at this time (namely MP620. iP4600 and others)
Reason being, smaller cartridges and presently not user-resetable (chips).

Grab a MP610 or iP4500 (or similar) while you can.

jflan is entirely correct. Run out and buy a model that uses the larger, refillable PGI-5 and CLI-8 series of cartridges.

You will save hundreds, perhaps thousands of dollars over the life of your printer.

These ip4500,mp610s and mp530s are on sale everywhere now..grab one or 2 while you can..you won't regret it!!!

I don't know where the ip4500s are. They might exist in real brick and mortar stores.

The mp610 is preferred. it has the three nozzles 1/2/5pl and the text 20/30pl (I don't remember the exact size).

the mp530 is based on the ip4200 printhead, and is smaller than the ip4300/4500, and only has the 1/5pl nozzles. But it's still a good printer.

I don't know the deal with the ip4600 other than for most operations it's slower and louder.

It is preferred only if one wants an AIO.
iP4500 uses the same print engine.

Yes, I know this, I think I just posted a list of printers that use the same printhead.

The thing is I know you can buy the mp610.

In fact it's now $90 from amazon.com

I don't know where you can buy the ip4500.

Yep, that's a killer deal for MP610....I already have one one ice or I'd be pulling the trigger on that one.
iP4500 is very hard to find now. Looks like all the usual suspects have sold them out.
eBay show, now.
