Well, I recently purchased the Hobbicolors 5 color set which includes 2 pigment blacks and 4 dye inks. I read on this forum that their pigment blacks are notorious for bleeding on paper. I personally use Xerox 96/24lb paper from Costco for both my Mx330 (refilled w/ dye based ink) and Mx860(oem so far, transitioning to hobbicolors soon) with no troubles so far... Has anyone had any positive experiences with the Hobbicolors pigment black, or has it been nothing but trouble for most users?

Thanks!

It is one of the best pigment black ink available out there. Their pigment blacks? I don't think they have many pigment black inks. As far as I know they have only one called PMT-BK.

I belive it is indeed the PMT-BK

So I take it you've had positive experiences with the ink? I noticed users complaining about bleeding issues, which is why I am kind of concerned.

Based my usage of the PMT-BK on several printers for several years I do recommend it. I don't know about the bleeding issues others are complaining about. The PMT-BK ink prints very dark text. A lot of cheap ink sold on eBay will give gray text, not black. Not all papers are the same. Most computer stores sell cheap paper for copy machines. The print quality will not be great although still very dark black with PMT-BK. I found an excellent paper that prints extremely well. Not only it is very deep black the text is extremely sharp. Unfortunately the paper has letter head on it. I don't know where my employer ordered the paper from. Costco had a paper long time ago. I still have half a box of it. It's brand name is Pinnacle. It is a 25% cotton bond laser/typing paper. This paper is already discontinued at Costco. It is one of the best paper I ever used.

I had a decent experience with this ink. It is dark but not quite as sharp on plain copy paper as the oem ink. I would not Consider it a bad ink, but not the best. The price is good.

I am now using the KMP ink from octoinkjet and it is a very close match to the OEM ink. It is about twice as expensive however. If you are printing a large quantity of drafts or papers just to read I would stick with the hobbicolors.

I had a bleeding problem with this ink with paper that I never had a problem with before. I switched to a 25% cotton paper until I used the ink up, but was an expensive route. I have used InkTec and currently use Image Specialist with no problems on bond paper and better.

Since you already have the ink, you should try it yourself to see the results - just my 2 cents.

Good luck!

I used Hobbicolors pigment black ink extensively. You may want to check out their latest. They have had at least 3 different pigment black inks maybe more as I know. They had one that wasn't very dark a few years ago. It wasn't called PMT-BK I don't remember what it was called. I believe their current PMT-BK is from Sensient Technology. It is a very good ink, very comparable to OEM PGI-5.

As RMM said this ink is cheaper than most major brands. It is perfectly for massive printing on cheap plain paper. But if you want quality you will want to use good paper and this ink will print exceptionally well too. This ink matches the darkness of black with OEM ink. I have printed more than 20,000 sheets of text /color document with Hobbicolors pigment black ink on my old ip4300. I probably have used all different pigment black inks they ever had. They were different. The latest one is a lot better than the first one they had many years ago.

The date of the thread is 1 year and 8 months ago. There should have been changes of the pigment black ink at Hobbicolors for that period of time. I probably used the ink too. I don't remember having the problem. Your thread tells that your application was more graphics work than text document. My application is more text document mixed with colored text, chart, highlighted text, etc. Your application is more like photos. I am not sure if you should print photos with a setup that is intended for text documents. I guess you could and perhaps OEM and some other inks could handle it fine. But if I were to print graphics I would set up to print photo and use all dye based ink. With proper selection of paper the print will be way better than that way you did it. You may want to try the latest PMT-BK from Hobbicolors. The current one is absolutely a fine ink and I use it everyday with no problems whatsoever.

The Hobbicolors PMT-BK ink does not print as sharp of text on plain copy paper as the original Canon ink that is for sure. If you care about razor sharp text on plain paper the Hobbicolors is not for you.

If you are printing loads of information that you will read once and throw away, or that you don't need the utmost of quality with then the Hobbicolors PMT-BK will do the job and save you a lot of money!

The KMP Canon ink is virtually indistinguishable from the OEM Canon ink.

The Hobbicolors is a good ink. KMP & OEM are great inks. I have no other experience with Canon pigment inks so I cannot speak to the quality of any of the others.
