1500 page Master's thesis requiring both "brilliant photo printing and documents" = Kinkos or some other similar printing service.

You may have prematurely killed your MP610 by working it too hard in a short period of time. You gave it a heart attack! These consumer machines were not designed to print 1500 pages, or anything near that amount, in a session.

IMO, Canon inkjets have the best blend of text and photo output. Your eyes may see differently. If you can, go to a store and look at the output of the printers you are considering before deciding.

If possible, get a Canon that uses the older CLI-8 or CLI-221 cartridges as these have transparent plastic to allow for easy gauging of when a cartridge is filled and there are chip resetters available. If you get one of the new Canons with the all opaque CLI-226, then you can swap its cchip onto a CLI-221 cartridge body in order to visualize fill amount, but there is no resetter available yet (rumored to be coming to the USA soon) so you will need to manually eyeball ink amounts so as not to run dry and burn out the print head. You could also weight of these new opaque cartridges to facillitate refilling (if you know the weight of a new factory filled cartridge, and you know the weight of a ml of refill ink, then you can figure out how much ink to refill after weighing the "empty" cartridge)

Epsons use a piezo electric print head which does not use heat and will not burn out if cartridge runs dry. But Epsons have their issues as well such as being more clog prone than Canons. Others will need to inform you about refilling of Epsons.

The key to keeping any printer you have running well is to use it regularly. Print a nozzle check or something that uses all the cartridge colors once every week or so, the time frame variable among member's opinions, has been the standard recommendation on the forum to decrease the risk of a clog.

Can't speak to HP, so others will need to help you here.

Which model depends on other factors you have not mentioned. If you do go with another Canon, base the decision on cartridge model, including any workarounds required to use refilled cartridges in the new printers.

I would not do a 1500 page print job on my printer. I want the printer to last. These kinds of heavy print jobs I would farm out to a professional service like Kinkos. It's up to you. Consumer printers are meant to be disposable and I doubt the manufacturer designed them to withstand 1500 pages in one session. How much per session is an unknown to me. I have done 50-75 duplex pages of mixed text/graphics in one print job and everything was OK. There are people on this forum who use their printers extensively, but they will need to comment on their experiences.

If you do not want one of the new Canons, you can look on eBay, Craigslist or some other similar site to find either a new or used model that uses the type of cartridge you are willing to refill. As I said, others will need to post on the merits of HP, Epson or other brands to give you more knowledge on what to choose.

I've given you my best general advice and will continue to advise if I can in the future.

My best suggestion, Epson Workforce 40 and a CISS system. The only problem is it's going to be all dye inks so I hope they don't require waterproof ink. The Epson Workforce 40 is built like a tank. Get a decent set of inks and the image quality on plain paper will turn out quite good, depending on the paper quality like HP presentation paper and the setting it will almost be photo quality. For these kinds of high volume outputs the CISS system can't be beat for convenience as you don't have to remove cartridges and refill, on mine I just press a button and the cartridges reset themselves. Some do it automatically so you can just print and print and print.

I suggest a good color laser printer! I used my old OKI C5950n for my MD graduate research and was awesome! Glossy prints of 100gr paper, sharp text! I just couldn't have achieve that with an inkjet printer. Look for an Epson C1100 (awesome even with photos), the new samsung clp-320 (cheap with good quality), Oki printers generally ... :)
