I posted a question here a couple of days ago but it seems to have disappeared, so I am reformulating it:

Has anyone used a (calibrated) flatbed scanner with Vuescan to profile a printer? This has been mentioned in the forum as a possibility but I haven't found any post that confirms anyone actually trying it.

I am aware that this method has obvious limitations – the flatbed scanner is likely to have a narrow density range so may not be able to capture the full gamut of the printed target. I am just considering it as a first step before shelling out for a second-hand ColorMunki.

better a second-hand Colormunki: way better or the CR30 Colorimeter (about €60 new on aliexpress.com).

You would need a color reference - a print or a film with known color data which you can purchase separately;

There is some software supporting this profiling method via a scanner

https://www.ddisoftware.com/prism/

But I very much support @pharmacist 's comment to rather go for a used ColorMunki which delivers pretty good profiles overall, or you look for the newer package i1Studio.

I cannot support the use of the print profiling package by Datacolor which can deliver pretty erroneous profiles
demonstrated here several times.

ArgyllCMS is a freeware software package which works together with spectrometers like the Colormunki which would be a very good performing low budget solution.

Well, I have profiled the scanner using an IT8 target, but the Vuescan procedure for printer profiling includes printing its own target (https://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/html/vuesc18.htm).

I'll have a go at the Vuescan method first and report on the results.

I use ArgyllCMS for a long time now for my display calibration, I can highly recommend it.
