Has anyone ever figured out exactly what a "deep clean" is?

The Deep Clean procedure on Canons is generally to be avoided. Yet they put it on the drivers? Why is this? Worse yet, it can cause more problems than it solves, Why?

I know about Deep Clean, but what "problems" are you talking about?

A print head cleaning on a Canon or Epson uses the peristaltic pump under the park pad to suction out some ink, and the rubber/felt wiper to wipe excess ink off the head. A deep clean just seems to run the pump longer, it may also wipe the heads more.

What problems? Other than using up a lot of ink.

Looking at my old iP1000, I believe the DEEP clean is a more "forceful" cleaning procedure, either by length of time it runs, or by the speed of the pump (faster rotation = more suction over a certain period of time). It says it is for "nastier" clots and such, I run it every so often "just to be safe"

Surely better to remove printhead and soak in warm water for a bit...

Are you implying that a "deep Cleaning" is actually a deep cleaning of your wallet when using OEM ink?

hahaha.... very well said fotofreek!

I'm not sure why, but I've always been reluctant to run the deep cleaning cycles. I think it's mostly because I don't like the thought of my waste tank filling up any quicker.

Any thoughts of how "hard" this may be on the printhead itself?

I don't think that it does anything at all to harm the print head. AFAIK, the cleaning cycles just pull a vacuum on the nozzles without "firing" them. A better description might be "priming" instead of cleaning, even though the plastic wipers do scrape across the bottom of the print head.
