Discussion on linux support for the epson sc-P900, drivers, print quality

It would be nice the Epson R1900/R2000/R3000, SC-P600/P700/P800 as well as the older Pro 3800/3880 and the newer ET-18100/ET-8500/ET8550 photo printers are supported too under Linux. Free printer drivers that support media settings and good color management is keeping me away from Linux: all other programs I am using have similar and good alternative under Linux but printing with color management is keeping me away from Linux.

ChromIQ runs fortunately under Linux now and so do ArgyllCMS drivers. We have Darktable for Lightroom and similar alternatives to PS and others, but this is the last one I am looking for: good free color managed printer drivers.

Erm… basically, everything’s already there, apart from the ET-18100/ET-8500/ET8550. But I reckon it’ll be easy to sort that out now.
I’ve just had a quick look at the settings for my P50 and was really surprised at just how powerful and flexible the Gutenprint support is.
You just need to know how to use all of it. Gutenprint even offers several colour models, as well as Quadtone curves for black-and-white printing, and not just the RGB model. And if you scroll down, there are loads more settings that let you configure the printer to suit any requirements.
It does, in fact, imply that Linux users need to be somewhat more experienced than Windows users. Freedom of choice always entails a certain degree of complexity and the need to configure things yourself.

Afaik gutenprint is not free if you want full control like the proprietary Epson Windows and macOS drivers.

Hallo pharmacist,

Perhaps you were thinking of a different programme?
But Gutenprint is an open-source project, with its source code released under the GPLv2 licence.
The proprietary programme QuadTonerIP, as well as Printfab and many other RIPs, were written based on the Gutenprint source code.
https://github.com/RobertKrawitz/gutenprint-mirror
This is a freely distributable package for all Linux systems and can be installed with just two commands.
The screenshot above shows Gutenprint running on Linux Mint 21.3.
Gutenprint supports all the printers listed above, except for the two newest ones. It also supports ICC profiles, curves, and RGB and CMYK colour models.

Best regards,
Alexander
