I know that most use the Durchstich refill method. However, I have chosen the top refill method. Some refill movies specify that one must stop refill process when ink level rises to height of bottom sponge. Then seal the air vent and continue filling to top of cartridge. Other movies make no mention of the necessity for sealing vent and demonstrate one continuous refill from bottom to top of ink compartment. Your ideas and experience would be most helpful in guiding me in the right direction.

And this movie seals the vent half way through the process

Thanks guys.

Second one is the right one, because this will balance the optimal pressure and degree of saturation of the sponge material. If the sponge is oversaturated, which is very common using the top refill method, the chances are very high your printer will produce striping and possibly banding. Most will think this is caused by a lack of ink, but it is actually too much ink. This will continue until the excess of ink is removed from the cartridge and a slight underpressure is reached in the sponge.

Hobbicolors is actually giving the advice of milking the cartridge after using the top refill method by pressing the cartridge (sponge side) until 5-10 drops of ink have escaped the ink outlet opening.

Also: take care you seal the ink outlet port very carefully, because I never managed to get this sealed properly with the orange cartridge clip and tape. Somehow it always leaks and stains my fingers and desk.

None of these problems occur with the Durchstich refill method: automatic pressure/saturation balance and no leaking from the ink outlet port + extra: no need to seal the refill hole.
