Recently my printer has not been recognizing my after-market cartridges, even though they worked a few months ago. Is there a way to get the Samsung (now under HP) to recognize after-market cartridges?

I think "Samsung (now under HP)" is the reason your after-market cartridges no longer works. HP uses firmware updates to block the use of remanufactured/after-market cartridges. See this and this . It seems this affects both inkjet and laser printers.
