These new cartridges for printers to be launched in November, the Canon Pixma iP7250, MG5450 and MG6350 come in two versions, standard and and XL.

From a Danish cartridge vendors site I found the capacities:

The standard PGI-550: 15 ml and XL version: 22ml
The standard CLI-551: 7 ml and XL version: 11ml.

The XL versions are not double size as I expected but only +50% approximately.

The link for the cartridge vendor: http://www.printerpatroner.dk/shop/sort-blaekpatron-550pgbk-4672p.html Google translate cannot handle this site properly but type numbers and capacities in ml don't need translation.

1 = 7.55DKK and 1$ = 5.72Dkk

As far as I know the Canon Pixma iP7250, MG5450 and MG6350 are European models, do you have any idea what the corresponding US model names would be?

Thanks

Like DVD movies Canon printers and cartridges are regionalized. The Canon region for US is 2 and for Europe it is 5.

My guess is therefore that these printers will be named iP7220, MG5420 and MG6320 and the cartridges will likely be named PGI-250/CLI-251 if or when these printers are introduced in the US.

These printers are mentioned under "New products" on the British Canon site, but not (yet?) mentioned on the American Canon site. Links are here: http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/newproducts/ and http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer?pageKeyCode=57

Thanks PeterBJ, I didn't know the "2" and "5" region numbers :)

I'm maybe looking for a new printer and was going to ask how to refill the new 550 cartridges. But I take it these are brand spanking new and 550 refill expertise is still scarce?

Not at all just replace the existing cartridges (Quick chip swap) for 521/520s
which can be got empty easily in OctoInkjet and your problems will be few..:)

Sounds amazing :D. But wouldn't that mean the 521 should fit on a printhead designed for 550 cartridges? I checked Octoinkjet's site and it doesn't confirm if 520's and 550 are swappable.

Original Canon cartridges are known to be excellent for refilling and as such they can be used either for:

- CLI-521 compatible printers
...OR...
- chip swapped with CLI-526/226 cartridges and used as refillable cartridges for CLI-526/226 printers
(original/compatible chips for 526/226 cartridges not supplied)

I also think it is too early to answer your question, I don't think any members have experience with these new printers or cartridges yet.

The capacity of the cartridges is between the PGI-5/CLI-8 and PGI-x20/CLI-x21 cartridges, and I think the dimensions of the cartridges will also be between the two older cartridge sets. So maybe the windowed PGI-x20/CLI-x21 can replace the non -XL PGI-550/CLI-551? Replacing the XL PGI-550/CLI-551 with PGI-x20/CLI-x21 might cause problems with the replacement cartridges being empty before the chip signals cartridge empty.

Because these cartridges are only new most sites are not catering for them
just yet that would also include the OctoInkjet site.

The latest two Canon Pro printers are using exactly the same cartridges as their older models are
so it would stand to reason that the PGI-550/CLI-551 cartridges would be the same
as the 525/526s which as we know are also the same size as the 520/521s..

Good point, a new production line for new cartridges is much more expensive than reusing an existing production line, with only the chip being new.

The nominal capacity for a CLI-521/CLI-526 cartridge is 10 ml. The nominal capacity of a CLI-551 XL cartridge is 11ml. Maybe it is possible to squeeze in an extra ml of ink into the CLI-526 cartridge, without problems with leaking or vent getting clogged? Normally overfilling is to be avoided, but see this post by mikling: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=57768#p57768

From filling and weighing CLI-521 cartridges I found that the capacity of the ink chamber was between 3 and 4 ml, I don't remember the exact figure. This makes it plausible that the standard cartridges are the same as the XL cartridges except for the standard cartridges having the ink chamber sealed off, like it is done in the HP standard (non-XL) 364 cartridges
