Hi Everybody!

Can MG5370 OEM cartridges (CLI-726) be refilled?
Can Ink Level Monitoring still remain intact?

Thanks,
SAFAI

Hi Cafai
The answer is yes but as they are opaque you then have to be carefully not to over fill them.

The ink monitoring is a different matter, normally with the older type cartridges you could hold in the resume button
(Orange light) for five seconds and then continue to print.

But as this method has not being tried with the newer cartridges we simply dont know yet..

Except for the chip your PGI-725/CLI-726 cartridges are identical to the PGI-225/CLI-226 used in the USA or the PGI-525/CLI-526 used in Europe. So they can be refilled. If you buy a resetter for the PGI-725/CLI-726 cartridges, you can reset the chips to full again, so you not have to disable ink level monitoring and loose warranty.

The cartridges are opaque, so it will be usefull to know the weight of the full cartrtidges. Here are the weights I found for a set of windowed PGI-520/CLI-521 cartridges:

The weights are without the orange clip and vent sealing tape, the weights are the same for the opaque cartridges, as the two sets of cartridges have same dimensions.

PGI-520: 35.3 g, CLI-521C: 20.3 g, CLI-521M: 20.2 g, CLI-521Y: 20.2 g and CLI-521BK: 20.4 g

The windowed PGI-x20/CLI-x21 are much easier to refill so many buy a virgin empty set of these from ebay or other place, and transfer the chip from the opaque cartridges to the windowed ones. Instruction in chip transfer: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=41631#p41631

For the windowed cartridges I would recommend the "German" or #Durchstich" method, instruction here: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=4315

For the opaque cartridges I think topfilling and checking the weight is the best method. For sealing the ink reservoir you will need a low profile silicone plug plus some aluminium tape to secure the plug in place.

Hi The Hat!

Thank you so much for your valuable input.
May I ask you a few more questions?

- What is the correct refill method for this kind of cartridge: CLI-726? Maybe, explained somewhere in the forums?
- Is this cartridge (including the chip) the same as CLI-426?
- Can the chip be reset?

Thanks a lot, in advance.
Cheers

Dear The Hat and PeterBJ,

Thank you so much for the detailed instruction and guidance. It has been really helpful.
I'd like to confirm one last point with you guys, if you don't mind.

Can printers such as MG5370 which are shipped with x26 cartridges from the factory, accept x21 cartridges as suggested by PeterBJ?
For this to happen, I only need to transfer the chip from the x26 to x21 cartridge, right?

Thanks

When your 726s get empty you can replace them with any of the 521/221 cartridges
but you will have to swap the chips from your current 726s to your new replacement ones.

It would also be better if you can get a resetter for your 726s, here is a link on how to swap your chip over..

I think there is no such thing as the best refill method. But two good methods that are very popular are the "German" method described here: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=4315 and the topfill method. There are different opinions on how topfill is done: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=40766#p40766 and from the same thread: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=40771#p40771 Note the difference between the two methods. If you do not seal the vent you must only fill the reservoir 75% to avoid oversaturation of the sponges. If you choose the topfill method, it is very important to seal the ink reservoir completely, else the cartridge will leak. A good seal uses a low profile plug plus aluminium tape, as there is very little clearance above the cartridges in newer Canon MG and MP models. See pictures of a properly sealed cartridge here: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=56592#p56592

- Is this cartridge (including the chip) the same as CLI-426?
Except for the chip the cartridges are identical. You can use a CLI-426 cartridge if you replace the chip with one from a CLI-726 cartridge. There is a chance that a CLI-426 cartridge can be turned into a CLI-726 by resetting it with a 726 resetter, but I cannot tell you what your chances of success are. See this thread: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=7845

- Can the chip be reset?
Yes the PGI-725/CLI-726 cartridges can be reset with a resetter designed for PGI-725/CCI-726 cartridges. See this link for a resetter and a list of Canons different regions worldwide, scroll down to see the list: http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/490914873/Chip_resetter_for_Canon_PGI_725.html?s=p There are other brands of resetter as well.

When transferring chips be careful not to get the chips mixed up as they are color coded. You will get problems with cartridges not recognised if you misplace the chips, as the printer identifies the cartridges from the chips.

Good luck with refilling.
Peter.
