Further to my last post: after removing the cyan cartridge I noticed that although the front chamber was almost full the sponge in the rear chamber was not fully saturated. I suspect therefore, that ink was not being drawn properly from the outlet hole and hence the weak cyan colours on the nozzle check pattern. Although replacing the cartridge with one that was filled with Jettec ink improved the check pattern, the improvement could be down to the ink flowing better from the replacement cartridge rather than the type of ink in the replacement cartridge, it's difficult to be sure.
I have just spent a fascinating few hours reading about the German 'Durchstich' method of refilling cartridges as mentioned in Pharmacist's and Bertil's posts. I will definitely be giving that method a try.
