Can I use Canon BCI-6 refill ink in a HP 45 cartridge?

My Canon ip5000 has died and someone just gave me an HP Photosmart 1315 printer. The black ink cartridge, HP 45, is empty. I have a lot of ink from PrecisionColors.com in Canada...used in my Canon BCI-6 and BCI-3e cartridges. I'd like to use some of the black ink in the HP 45 cartridge, but I'm not sure if I should, or which of the two types of black I would use.

Does anyone know if this is a good idea?

It is perfectly all right. The Pigment black Image Specialists ink recommended for the Canon BCI-3e and the HP45 cartridge is the same WJ1020 ink. You can also use the dye inks for the Canon BCI-6 CMY cartridges in the HP78 cartridge. The magenta ink is the same WJ5063 for both HP and Canon. The cyan and yellow inks are not identical but similar. They will not damage the 78 cartridge, and plain paper colour documents will be fine. Photos might have some colour cast.

You should not use the dye/photo black ink type WJ1008 in the HP45 cartridge as mixing dye and pigment inks might cause clogging.

Using the search engine on the Image Specialists page you linked, I did not get a finding for an HP Pigment Black ink when querying on either the printer model, the ink Cartridge ID or the IS Ink Number you listed.

Speaking of American English, turns out the way we here in the States speak is the way the British spoke until around the American Revolution, at least the accent in the Mid West like myself. Seems the wealthy Brits, flush in the wave of their Industrial Revolution, desired to further separate themselves from the common man and began changing their accent, including dropping their "r's" before consonants (non-rhotic speech). Eager entrepreneurs were all to willing to take the well-to-do's money to teach them the new fad. Eventually, what was to be a defining characteristic of the upper crust spread across the land. Americans retained rhotic speech except in certain Atlantic coast areas, such as New York and Massachusetts, the very places the British presence penetrated the longest/most or had great support.

The ink finder is not 100% perfect but here are my findings:

Here is the search for the Canon iP5000 inks:

Entering HP Photosmart 1315 only finds the dye inks for the HP78 cartridge:

Entering the cartridge HP45 finds the pigment black ink:

The ink finder is not perfect for the HP Photosmart 1315, but try entering HP Deskjet 930C that uses the same type 45 and 78 cartridges, now inks for both cartridges are shown:

PeterBJ, thanks again for the good information, I should have plenty of pigment ink left over, but I don't even know if the HP 45 is a chipped cartridge, is that something I'll have to deal with?

Also, can you suggest a good replacement for my Canon ip5000, something that is easier to find used and can be easily refilled. And prints text well and fast. I actually have a few HP 1160 printers, and I liked them but was eventually stymied by the expiration date on the cartridges and stopped using them years ago.

Using HP printers can be quite unaffordable on OEM inks, but if you want something better that can be refilled easily, then investigate the Maxify model series, there are quite a few to choose from (Pocket wise) but the one thing they all have in common is their ease of use and speed...

I've been looking at the Maxify printers, but Canon sez they don't have drivers for Windows XP. Do you know of anyone using them with XP?
