Wondering if the Canon ClI221 and PGI 220 cartridges and ink would safely work in my Canon MG 6821 which uses CLI271&PGI270. They appear to be compatible in size but wonder if the printer would recognize them and function, if so would the 221&220 inks create issues.

Just curious as I have a large collection of the CLI221&PGI220s

The chips on the cartridges are specific for Region of the world as well as model(s) of printers they can be used in.

The 270/271 chips will not be usable in a printer that uses 220/221 chipped cartridges.

That said, it is possible to use the ink between the two cartridge types (Yello Gello or other issue withstanding), but then you would need to get either a chip resetter or ARC chips (AutoReset Chip), or use a compatible cartridge with an ARC chip, or turn off ink level monitoring.

Replacing the chips with ARC's should technically work, but I am quite sure the colors don't match.
Also we don't know anything about the composition of the ink, I remember rumors the newer printers require an ink with higher cooling capabilities.
If it was as simple as that, why would Canon introduce another cartridge type every 2-3 years ?

I’m sure there’re technical reasons too but, according to the cynical mind of a grumpy old man like me, this is mainly a matter of business/money.
Changing the chips means that third party manufacturers will need at least a few months to make working resetters/ARCs for the new cartridges. In the meantime, everybody has to use OEM products.

The cartridge series PGI-x20/CLI-x21 and PGI-x70/CLI-x71 aren't the same dimensions, so a cartridge from one series doesn't fit into a printer designed for the other series. Compare the images, PGI-220 here and PGI-270 here. Notice the PGI-270 cartridge is longer than the PGI-220.
