Another comparison pigment Ink Test.. !

Once I got my Pro 10 working again I had to print something on it to make sure it was running ok, so I did this test print and the same on the Maxify, I want to leave it out in the Winter weather for a few months to see what the difference will be..

One uses Canon pigment ink and the other is using Image specialists pigment ink..
There won’t be as must reaction from the UV light, but at this time of the year, the angle of the sun will be almost 180 degrees to the image..

I’ve printed two test sheets so I’ll have both of them to compare, one under cover the other outdoors till I’m happy with the results....

That will be another interesting test - which Canon ink - Lucia or Lucia Pro or ?? are you actually using, and which paper ?

I am using the Canon GI-56 bottled inks, (Lucia or Lucia Pro), haven’t got a clue, and I use the Lidl United Office Sihl 280 gm High Gloss Photo Paper. (That’s my go too A4 glossy paper).

I also do have HP Semi and full gloss A2 rolls, but they are too messy to use for just a one off print test, and the curl might give feeding issues on the Maxify..

Nevertheless it would be interesting if you printed a couple of sheets on HP paper, so we could see the differences of the same pigment inks on good quality paper vs. 'not that good' paper.

Yes, handling big rolls is messy and with some papers almost impossible to flatten the sheet, no matter the system you use. Printing sheets cut from a roll I always enable 'avoid paper abrassion' on the driver. On the Maxify I enable it too when I print on 120gr. plain paper. If not, it tends to smear the top of the page.

Despite my misgivings, I did a test print on the semi-gloss HP paper and put that out for exposure too, and yes it did get a couple of smears on it, but what those it matter..

So the next couple of months should be interesting..

Looks like an interesting test. I would have thought a few lighter shades should be included as higher density strips might not fade as quickly as a 50% density of the same shade. Reviewing some of the fade tests published, not all colors or densities fade at the same rate.

The high density strips are better at determining the overall quality of the inks, and as this test is destructive, its aimed at all of the colours, one printer only has 4 single individual colours, but the other has 10, so a bit of extra mixing is involved..

P.S. Plus the paper also plays its part..

Finally seeing as I was doing tests I thought this in for fun..



All these exposed images got whatever sun and wind there was for the past six months and still they held up rather well, (Except for the dye inks) but OEM inks faired out that much better..

The only printer on OEM inks was the Maxify, but bear in mind these are cheap bottled OEM inks and are not the original Canon cartridges inks..

I started a printout of this posting with dye inks - that's really quite a comprehensive test - @The Hat - but I switched over and reprinted the posting with pigment inks...............

This long term test basically confirms previous comments and assumptions

- 3rd party dye inks cannot compete with pigment inks - the print with the I.S. dye inks as well show a wide variation between the different colors - the black patch looks much stronger than the other patches which are almost gone. This test does not compare the I.S. dye inks with other dye inks - e.g. Canon OEM

- The test shows quite a hue diference between the magenta patches of the I.S. and the Canon magenta, this probably can be corrected via the driver with some color offset, or with an ICC profile which would show as well differences in the gamuts of these inks

- There are visible differences between the patches printed on the Aldi or the HP paper which has been discussed and shown already earlier - the choice of the paper has a significant impact onto the hue and color saturation of a specific ink.

- The Canon ink overall appears to have a better longevity than the I.S. pigment inks

- This all goes back to the discussion what the user can expect from a particular ink, what he actually needs and whether the reported performance differences are reflected in pricing differences. Not all prints somebody does need to last for years or whatever
