I am not sure, but from a certain date on the T580x for the Epson Pro 3880 cannot be reset with the resetter. Yesterday I was experimenting on a set of older cartridges, which I kept in a vacuum sealed box and the exit hole firmly sealed with tape. They all can be reset to full with the Epson Pro 3880 maintenance tank resetter, enabling them to be refilled.

But yesterday with this second-hand printer I bought, the cartridges could not be reset and the oldest cartridges was from december 2016, despite the green light my resetter flashes as a sign the reset was succesfully. Unfortunately the ink levels stay the same when reinserted into the printer, unlike the older cartridges where the ink level all were reset to full.

I am not sure this has to do with either the cartridge date or the firmware version. My older Epson Pro 3880 has firmware P0079C-1.03.800E and the one I bought yesterday has firmware P01797-1-03.800E

I have experiment a bit later to sort out the exact problem. But for the moment my guess is that with newer cartridges/firmware the only way would be using refillable cartridges with a bridge chip on the cartridge sensing the original cartridge chip.

I have firm. P030D8-1.03.800E

Never had that problem. I was one of the last to catch that printer here in Sweden.
Number "indicate" that mine is newer.

Didn't Jose R. say that if an oem chip is once piggybacked you can seldom resett it again. (In my backhead..) Could it be that?

Read read read: with refillable cartridges with a bridge chip like yours this is not an issue. I am still testing, but it has to do with refilling original cartridges and reset the OEM chip with a resetter. With piggyback sensor chips, as in refillable cartridges, this is not a problem, provided the original chip did not drop below 15 %. I installed my refillable cartridges with piggyback sensor chip in my latest Epson Pro 3880 and not problem at all: because the printer reads the sensor chip, not the original chip, which is underneath it. But when I try to reset the original cartridges, the resetter tells me (green light) the reset was succesfull, but the printer says NO.

I have both and prefer oem carts. Quality, no air on the ink, simple to shake keeping pigment even distrubuted in the inksolution etc and the inkmonitor works.

I'm though surprised of the resetting as You described above - I have some newer once (ok who knows) but those do resett and works on my 3880.
OK - I understand but I am surprised that epson also now are fiddling with older printers long out of production.

OK - FYI - I have a set where I can read 08-2016 that can be fully reset. Four month older than Yours. The other carts are given away and those chips are piggybacked so I have not the dates for them.

Jose R. once changed his recommendation of chip resetter to the "389 one" without the aligning help.
However I'm sure You have that "tricky" one.

But anyhow:
That older resetter would acted as yours on LK, LLK, and VLM.

Actually I was the first who discovered that the waste ink tank resetter could also be used to reset the ink cartridges. At that time I did not know how to overcome the one way valve. José picked up my discovery and he was able to defeat the one way valve, so it is now possible to refill those cartridges.
