Just as the pigment inks in my PRO-10 and Maxify have negligible gloss differences on a fair number of glossy (and in particular pearl) papers. Never seen the dreaded "bronzing" either.
(Dis)advantages of both ink types are grossly exagerated.
Since I mostly print glossy, if I had to start...
From own experience I agree with @Artur5.
Buy a PFI-106M cart (130ml) to refill. PFI-1000M (80ml) would do also (no experience).
Not cheap but half price/ml versus PGI-72M. Maybe you could find an expired one on eBay (they last forever).
Since you have to replace only a few colors your average...
Interesting discussion again.
BUT as I understand from the many positive reviews of the ET-8550, the dye inks - as genuine Epson - should have a fairly good fade resistance. The printer seems to be a star in making very glossy prints.
So why would you want to fill it with pigment inks - except...
It seems you live in the States, where Canon was giving these printers (I suppose more PRO-100 than PRO-10) away with a pack of paper, so you probably will find even a new PRO-100.
Since you are used to a pigment printer, where also 3th party ink have a rather good fade resistance, (let's say...
Very interesting rehearsal !
BE CAREFUL.
I used v5204 several times yours ago and was able to reset a PRO-9500, PRO-10 and Maxify (to test, not because the counter was full).
I launched it again (without reading the manual) and it was placed in quarantaine by Avast (IMO a false positive due to...
None of these printers have a replaceable maintenance tank.
But the internal ink absorber is large, most users probably will never fill it.
Just in case you can reset the counter and deviate the purge tubes to an external "potty".
So the main problem stays finding a replacement printhead...
Let's face it, there are no refillable printers anymore, and those that were are getting old (and should be avoided to buy used). Refill tools and ink are not cheap either.
If I had to start over I would go for the Epson ET-8550 (as long as Canon doesn't offer something comparable).
That nozzle check is probably recoverable with good management. Try to view with a loupe or by scanning with high resolution to see the individual dots. You will see that white lines often still show lighter and smeared out dots, meaning the ink flow is not completely interupted.
No experience...
This is certainly so for the consumer dye printers.
But in the photo printers the PRO-9500 (pigment) had a rather short living printhead.
No idea if the PRO-9000 (dye) head was based on this one, but the ones of both the PRO-10 (pigment) and PR0-100 (dye) live much longer.
My MB5150 is my second too.
The first one is kept in stock, I guess with what I know now I can revive it. Have a spare printhead also.
Agree on the 3th party inks.
I refill from the GI-56 bottles for the ink tank versions without any problems (except ink cross contamination sometimes due to...
Don't panic.
Get the chips right as @The Hat suggested and reinsert all carts.
Clean the contacts (of the chips and where they connect in the printhead) with isopropanol.
Canon printers tend to become crazy after several errors, driving users who fiddle with them crazy.
Work step by step.
