Because I do not want to buy an expensive resetter for my PGI-550/CLI-551 cartridges, I wonder if it would be possible to replace the original chips of these cartridges with auto reset chips.

PGI-550/CLI-551 chips have a built-in booby trap. Removing the chip will tear off the connection, destroying the chip.

On the long term original cartridges work better for ink flow and reliability.

Please report your results if you try this modification. Does anybody know where to find "Virgin Empty" OEM PGI-550/CLI-551 XL cartridges? I searched E-Bay but found none.

From experience with the former generation 525/526, I would strongly insist in using OEM cartridges and a resetter.
This makes them work exactly as designed by Canon and you will avoid a lot of problems.

As @pharmacist does now, I've built a stock of empty OEM carts by begging on social media :hu.

Who would ever have taught that 550/551 carts would be in short supply or demand, most guys can’t wait to get rid of them.

The real issue with the 551/550 were that most switched to using refillables rather than purchasing the XL carts, I know I did.

I tried to refit a 3rd party chip onto the 550/551 carts but the chip type that I used at that time were way too thick to fit, so I scratched the idea...:(

You will have to cut away some plastic. Just have a look at the manual link of octopus-office.de
