Hi,

I need some help with my printer. I recently upgraded my old cheap HP to a cannon pima pro 100 for my invitation printing business. I printed one photo on it and it looked amazing. Then I went to print an invitation on 100lb cover paper and the lines aren't crisp on the fonts, and anything with large amounts of ink looks spotty and grainy. I even tried printing the same files I print on my HP that come out fine on the cannon and they look terrible and blurry. Any suggestions? I am not sure what ICC profile to use because the paper I have doesn't have one listed. Thanks!

Sarah

Hi Sarah and welcome, now start by telling us what application you are using to print your Invitations from and what setting you are using, the Pro 100 is a lot better and different than an HP printer.

Try just using the normal standard/high setting and let the printer handle all of your colour and profiling, something like this below.

Hi,

I have tried printing from a few different applications. I have used adobe reader, just printing it as a pdf and I have printed straight from illustrator from the original .ai file. Both still had the blurriness to them. The best out of the two was when I printed from adobe acrobat reader and selected 'envelope' as my media. I have also played around with a bunch of different settings, especially within the media selection box.

When running it from illustrator, it gives me the option to 'let illustrator determine the colors'. Should I do this? Or should I go into the printer menu (in the image below, its the button on the bottom) and control my settings from there. I apologize for what a novice I am. I really appreciate the help!

Im also attaching a picture of the graininess on the print, so you can see what I am talking about.

It’s obvious your using a Mac O/S so things tend to get a bit confusing with that, from what I can see there is no reason why you can’t use Illustrator to print from but allow the printer to handle the colours and for “Media setting” pick one that is close to the type of paper surface that your using and size, set the print quality to high and make sure that Illustrator is set to use RGB output and not CYMK, then have another go.

Happy Printing..

P.S. double check you setting before clicking Print because get the steps in the wrong order and the Mac O/S has a habit of reverting to Default and ignoring your new settings..

Did you print the photo and the invitation on the same type of paper or different papers ? If different - are both papers suitable for inkjet printing ?

Yes, the paper says its 'laser and ink jet guaranteed' on it. Its from Kelly paper and it's the kelly digital brand, if that helps. I am wondering if it is the paper now. I just tried printing the invite on photo luster paper that came with the printer and it is very crisp. But unfortunately that photo luster paper is not appropriate for the invite and it would be really expensive to print on. Any suggestions on a good heavy weight paper that I could fine an ICC profile to?

All of them! LOL
That should answer your question. It is the paper. Just because the paper "Claims" to be suitable it does not mean it really is. There is a lot of BS being sold out there. Look into Red River papers. They have lots of options for the type of work you are doing.

Would be good to know your location. Paper is bulky and heavy per volume unit so long distance shipping can be expensive.

If you are in North America suggest you look at redriverpaper.com

They have a large range of papers that, in my opinion, represent very good value for money. They also have downloadable ICC profiles, but only for a limited range of printers.

if you are in EU or elsewhere others may have appropriate suggestions.

Paper 'suitable' for both laser and inkjet actually is the lowest possible compromise for both, inkjet papers have a special coating which is not usable at all in lasers, such inkjet papers are available in a wide range of surfaces , textures and formats from matte to glossy and with lots of different weights, you may follow the advise above for paper sources, or ask for a particular area/region and may describe more specifically the paper you are looking for

In your first posted image, I noticed that the "printer profile" is shown as "sRGB................". I am not familiar with Apple software or the printing software you are using, but I would have expected to see a profile referenced to a specific Canon paper, rather than sRGB.
