As you can probably guess, I don’t really know what I am doing. Blundering along is fine for now.

Hadn't noticed the difference in the Canon ink. Will keep eyes peeled in the future.

RE - probably will need a custom profile if correct colours is a concern.

Well ….. i've always done things the wrong way, and too late to change now.

Instead of a custom profile (are maybe as well as), I intend to get the file ready, and then make ten variations. Print that, choose the best. Is that wrong?

Maybe I will learn about custom profiles along the way, but it doesn’t sound exciting.

If someone has one of these (presumably a rough approximation), and thinks I will need it …. Let me know.

As said, most chances the ink is better than 3th party copies of the original Lucia.
No idea if changes in the printheads and inks of later generations would make older inks unusable.

But supply is dwindling and prices rising (and this conversation won't help much to that).

Bronzing and gloss issues should of a lesser concern when you print on matte paper, and the chroma optimizer is most likely not used and not effective either on a matte paper.

Yes, that’s what I understand, and convenient to reduce the number of cartridges required.

Therefore, it seems the 3rd party pigment might be OK (when used with Matte paper), but we do not yet have fading stats (and the distributor didn’t seem to have any, and wasn’t interested in supplying ink (free) to be tested.

Why are you concerning about pigment aftermarket inks for fading ? For dye ink I would bother about this, but even aftermarket pigment inks will last for decades.

Hi, The reason for asking is to seek info.

My opinion is the Korean ink factory is likely to produce a good product (why wouldn’t they?)

It seems to me, this 3rd party ink is fine (on the intended paper).

Two people have noted bronzing on glossy paper (of no concern to me, but maybe of interest to others).

At this point, I conclude, the Inktec product is probably fine (or maybe great).

Researching this brought up older information about 3rd party DYE ink that didn’t look good at all.

This made me wonder why the inferior product existed, and if it did, and was in fact inferior, maybe the pigment variety also had hidden problems.

…. I asked (here), and learned more (and also saved myself the bother of messing around with cartridge chips).

Basically, you know more about inks than me, and something obvious to you, is not to me.

ADD .... Concern about longevity, fading.

In 1990 I purchased some of the first digital imaging equipment in the world.

The fastest computer speed at that time was 25 (compared to around 3000 today), and the largest hard drive available was 400mb (Megabytes).

My math may be rusty, but that hard drive fits into a pocketable 5tb (Terabyte) drive 125,000 times (unconfirmed), and the price for storage was probably a million times higher than it is today.

This gives me the perspective of both experience and history.

Anyway, amongst the pile of unknown equipment was a Kodak printer that used rolls of coloured plastic to somehow produce 10x8 digital prints/ The price of that piece of junk was $10,000 and each box of plastic and paper cost $330 per hundred sheets.

For fun, I printed my passport photos using this amazing new gear, anticipating extended longevity due to the cost, and also because it was made by Kodak.

Within 5 years, the images had faded so much, my face was barely recognizable.

By the time the passport expired, almost nothing remained.

That image was inside a passport, in the dark, and underneath bonded plastic.

That is why I am inquiring here about ink longevity, because I know I cannot assume.

I gathered some background info about the issues around the fading of dye vs. pigment inks - fading can only be viewed together with the paper such inks are printing on - the info in my posting only refers to OEM material - Epson or Canon or HP inks and papers - the situation can be completely different with other - noname - other 3rd party suppliers like Inktec - Conecolor - precisioncolors etc - wide variations are possible. There are quite some test reports available for dye inks - see my posting - but there are no - no - no comparable test reports whatsoever published with 3rd party pigment inks - and even if you would find one report for a pigment ink X on paper Y you cannot transfer such results at all to your combination of inks and papers

Ink Stained Fingers wrote (on another page) - not aware of any relevant information about the performance of 3rd party pigment inks - all those Inktec - precisioncolors - Conecolors etc inks

Lack of information leads to guesswork.

Ink suppliers unable / unwilling to test their own products doesn’t help.

As mentioned previously, if I were to use 3rd party ink of any kind, it is necessary to print my own tests, put them outside without glass, with glass, and inside and wait and examine.

That is the reason for asking here about fade performance.
