That is not going to be easy, so do what others do and wash them in warm soapy water, rinse in clean water and let them dry..

Tip.. put them back in when still a bit damp.. good luck..
P.S. Have you reset the waste ink counter yet ?..

Google finds many European suppliers of these absorbers. Here is a British supplier. It's seen the parts number is QY5-0408 so maybe a US supplier can be found?

But before buying new absorbers I suggest to reset the absorber counter. Do you need instructions?

A third choice is to reset the waste ink pad counter and do nothing with the pads. If this is the first time you have reset the waste ink pad counter then reports from a handfull of members are there is room for one more cycle without leaking of ink. You may want to place a tray under the printer just in case.

You probably know that once the waste ink pads are full the printer will stop working. In order to print again you will need to enter Service Mode and reset the waste ink pad counter as The Hat and PeterBJ have said.

Entering Service Mode requires a series of specific button pushes. Resetting the waste ink counter requires a proper version of a Service Tool (software).

If you do open up the printer to either wash the pads or replace them then do take pictures of each step, noting the angle or relationship of the part before removal. Some parts are very specific in how they are oriented. A picture trail to help you reassemble will be very helpful.

I confirm by experience, @stratman's assertion that usually those inkpads are capable of absorbing considerably more ink after the counter has reached full.

A number of factors will change in more or less the ink capacity of the pads.
1-specific model of printer. Some of them may have been more 'liberally' sized by Canon. Others might not be so compliant.
2-Conditions of storage and printing pace: As time goes by, the ink soaking the pads, will become more concentrate, because the volatile part (water ) evaporates slowly, making more space for the new ink being poured into the pads. Hot and dry rooms will ease the process. Damp and cold storage will slow it down.
Besides, printing a given number of pages in a few months isn't the same that printing those pages spanned several years. In the second case there's much more time for evaporation.
That said, it's very difficult to evaluate the real effect of these factors on the actual capacity of the waste ink pads.
As @stratman said, a safety tray under the machine is the only way to ensure a reasonable peace of mind.
