Hey guys,

I have an ix6520 that was working fine, then sudden print head death. I noticed that some of the MG-series of printers have a compatible head, so I bought one.
I tested the A4 printer, the printhead worked fine. Put it in the ix6520, it recognized the printhead (solid blue light).

Next, I try to print on the ix6520 with the replaced head, it goes thru the motions, makes as if it's printing, one line at a time, but the page comes out blank! I tried a number of nozzle checks, cleaned out the head with cleaner, replaced the cartridges but it is still "printing" just white pages, not even a streak!

This is pretty strange and I'm wondering if maybe there is a software lock preventing printheads from (cheaper, smaller) MG-printers to work on the more expensive ix-series?

Or what do you guys think?

AFAIK there’s no such tbing as a software lock. Provided both printers use the same printhead model, it should be fine on both. The IX6520 uses the QY6-0080.

Now, concerning your problem, if I understood correctly, after the printhead of your IX6520 failed you purchased a new Canon MG printer. That printer worked fine. Then you installed the printhead of the MG into the IX6520 and no ink came from it.

First, which model is this MG ?. It might be that it uses a different printhead that will fit in a IX6520, but it won’t work correctly. That would be rare because the printer should warn that the printhead is not compatible, while you say that it’s recognized without errors.
I gather that you checked the ink cartridges. If you tried to reinstall back the printhead into the smaller MG printer and it works fine as before removing it, then there’s another possibility. Sometimes, when a printhead fails it damages the logic board of the printer and this is it. That printer becomes a paperweight. This issue is not very common but it happens now and then. I hope it’s not your case, but if you’re sure that both printers use the same printhead model and the MG works fine but the iX6520 no, then the IX6520 must be faulty somehow.

It looks like I have a similar case like that, but I have a spare printer on it's way.......I soon will find out

Exactly what print head model number did you buy? Link to the sale?

What printer model is this? I see that you own Canon ix6520, Pro 9000, and i9900. The print heads are quite different, including the obvious that one uses 5 cartridges (ix6520) and the other two use 8 cartridges (Pro 9000 and i9900)

Put it in the ix6520, it recognized the printhead (solid blue light).
Solid blue light where?

Did the inserted cartridges elicit a Red light on the cartridge as seen in the link below?

Thank you all for the replies!

Here's exactly what happened. I bought a used MG5320, as it shares the QY6-0080 printhead but it only cost $20 on kijiji. The nozzle check tested perfect, so I put it in storage. A few months later, the ix6520 head died (orange flashes, I checked it against the service manual) and so I went for the backup in the MG. The printer accepted the replacement head (also QY6-0080, I checked) and is no longer flashing orange but displaying a solid blue around the power button (blue is the "normal" colour on this one).

However it is not printing anything! Changed the carts several times, and they are flashing red when they run out. Did cleaning, nozzle checks, wasted a whole set of carts. Everything seems in perfect running order, including the printing motions as it pretends to print... but the page then comes out white.

I'm pretty ready to give up on it, but I love the small format and 13" capability of this body.

At the risk of hijacking the thread with a different topic, I'm wondering if there is a good recommendation for a easily-refillable 13" printer that can handle some volume? I'm a photographer, and routinely give out 300+ prints in a package to clients. I've been running through Canon printers like crazy, my second Megatank printer just gave at only 3000 pages, and I'm not sure what to try next.

What brand/model can handle 5000+ photo prints (ranged 4x6-8x10) without breaking down? A good advice here would be very precious, thanks so much guys!!

If I understand you correctly, the print head in the used MG5320 worked when you bought it. Then you stored the MG5320 away. A few months later your ix6520 print head failed.

A complete description of the ix6520 failure would be helpful, including which lights and their color(s) were flashing the error code and also how many times the lights flashed in each of the repetitions.

It appears both printers use the same print head model. A question is whether the failure of both heads result in the same symptoms and error codes.

It may be possible that the stored print head clogged up with dried ink. I don't know how may months it was in storage - you did not say -or what the storage conditions were. If the print head was still installed in the printer then I would think there would be some ink on the "printed" page if less than 3-4 maybe 6 months or even more. Of course the cartridges would need to have ink and not be dried up either. Too many unknowns to be sure of anything at this point.

Also, have you tried putting the "new" used print head back in the MG5320, it's original printer it came from If so, what happens? Before trying this read below.

Caveat: There is concern for an electricalmalfunction to spread from the print head to the logic assay board in the printer AND vice versa. This appears to be a very rare occurrence. Canon Service Manuals in the past instruct the replacement of both components for certain issues. Usually a new print head resolves most printing issues but there is the risk that the MG5320 print head was corrupted by trying it in the ix6520. Putting it back in the MG5320 may permanently corrupt its logic assay board. Or the print head may function. Just be prepared to sacrifice the MG5320 if you try this.

It is good thinking to be looking for another printer. Don't have a specific recommendation except to buy new or make sure a nozzle check is perfect and the page count (number of pages printed) on the nozzle check is not too high.
