is it possible to put the older cartridges into the Pro-300? I think the inks inside the cartridges are the same so the question is about the chips compatibility.
Many unknowns.

Do the cartridges for the older models fit and function in the Pro-300? Canon has reused a cartridge model in newer models but the chips were different. Example: the CLI-8 and the CLI-42 cartridges.

Will the chips of the older cartridges be recognized? Most likely not if history is our guide. You will need to either disable ink level monitoring or find aftermarket chips or a chip resetter. As far as I know, there are no aftermarket chips or chip resetter for the new Pro-300 currently.

One more issue may be using the older cartridges - IF they fit - and ability to disable ink level monitoring. The printer may reject the chip on the older cartridge and not allow you to get to disable monitoring - or anything else. In this situation, you will need to swap the Pro-300 chip onto the old cartridge model.

You could also extract the ink from the older cartridge and refill the empty Pro-300 cartridge and then disable ink level monitoring. This is probably the better solution.

If money is an issue then the best solution is to buy a printer you can find less expensive cartridges or the ability to refill and maintain ink level monitoring.

I am curious about two things. How come program 1000 and 2000 inks will fit the really small compartment inside the pro300? I mean they look quite bulky and hold in fact almost 5 times as much ink as the original inks for pro300 (the pfi-300 series inks).
To start with you can only use the PGl-65 carts in your printer, what I was referring to way buying bigger carts and using just the inks from them to refill your own carts, that way the ink costs are much lower. If you’re not going to refill then this exercise is pointless.
And secondly: what do you mean by 'tweaking'? I use calibrated iMac 5k display to prepare the prints and then send them to the printer using both photoshop/canon's utility
or is there a method to correct the inks 'within' the printer?
You can use the printer Properties in the driver to alter and change how the printer will print to your paper.. But self-made ICC profiles are a much better option,

PRO-10 (PGI-72) carts fit in the PRO-300, they are physically the same but the printer raises an error about the chip.

Since there are no ARC's or a resetter, the only way is disabling ink monitoring in the PRO-300.
But this was done also in the early days of the PRO-10 (and PRO-100) and both the printers and their users are still alive.
How the PRO-300 will react is unknown at this moment (but it is not the first time it was found out on this forum things deemed unfeasible were possible ;)).

Most observers estimate the chances for a PRO-300 resetter low.

@stratman you’re VERY optimistic thinking that there’s an infinitesimal chance that the chips of PGI-65 carts may be compatible with those in the PGI-72. Canon would be shooting at their own feet if they did so. I suspect that the main reason for releasing the Pro-200/Pro-300 was to make the new printers totally incompatible with current third party products.

Please folks, don’t encourage the users to disable ink monitoring on Canon printers with small non stationary carts. After one or two printheads burned and tons of ink poured into the waste ink pads, it would have been cheaper to use only OEM cartridges from the beginning.

You are reading way too much into what I wrote, Artur. The fact is history tells us the chips will not be interchangeable, but, no one has tried it yet to my knowledge. That's the stuff I leave to our fearless Moderator.

I am NOT suggesting the chips are interchangeable NOR for anyone to buy the printer with a hope they will be. Read my entire post for what I consider to be best practices for the OP.

In conclusion, there is a greater chance that you are model Kate Upton than the Pro 300 accepts a different cartridge's chip. In other words - zero.

Ok, thank you guys for very useful info on every topic I've raised and some more :)

I don't want to try and disable ink monitoring, for reasons well described on this forum far too many times I believe.

I know that the best way to avoid expensive cartridges was to but Pro10s, but as I mentioned earlier, it was impossible to buy in mid October and I had to buy then (tldr: I received a grant from one of government's agencies and had to buy right away).

Thank you for the advice on

Thank you for that. I knew that method and hoped that maybe there is another way to achieve that. But from my point of view, creating a profile for each and every paper instead of using good-to-go profiles from manufacturers is going to be much more expensive than to buy OEMs.

I am all new to the world of third party inks/cartridges and learned about resetters just today. I hope that there is a chance that someone will make one in the future for Pro-300. But as of now, there is shortage of cartridges, many companies still didn't create ICC profiles for this model, there is virtually none multipack of cartridges... Many many things about to happen to kickstart this printer and make it market-ready in my opinion. I wanted to buy the more expensive Pro-1000 which much more affordable $/ml ratio but of course, as ever, money was the problem.

@stratman, I assumed that you were convinced of the total incompatibiliy but your words "will the chips of the older cartridges be recognized? Most likely not if history is our guide." might be understood by some users that you had still a very, very faint hope of being wrong.

How do you know positively that I'm not Kate Upton ?. ( I'm not saying yes or not :p )

I completely agree with you on that one, disabling the ink monitoring is not for the faint hearted especially when using salvaged OEM inks, and a print head failure is only a short walk away..

I reckon what @stratman was referring to was the possibility that these new chips were similar to the PGl-72’s and that an older resetter might reset the Pro 300 chips, this happened with the Pro 9500, when the CLl-8 chip resetter could reset 8 of the 10 CLl-9 chips on that machine.

That is really interesting. And when you plugged the resetter, did the printer 'see' the cartridge as a proper one for that machine (pro9500 in this case)?

Only your plastic surgeon knows for sure. ;)

a very, very faint hope
Do you know this to be 100% proven not true? No. But the odds are as I posted. No matter how much you wish you were, you are not Kate Upton. It's the facts as we know them as this moment and that you cannot argue against. :old

I would have posted a photo of Kate Upton but management would probably delete it due to arcane rules about elbows and beautiful models.
