I am having a lot of problems with colors shifting on my Pro-100 and am guessing my Precision Colors ink is shifting due to age. The Precision Colors ink is over 2 years old. I want to start over fresh with a set of new CLI-42 carts from Canon. I am concerned that simply replacing the Yellow cart will lead to clogging in my print head. Does anyone know if this is a valid concern and if so how can I make the shift and avoid clogging.

@Wayne B, If you reckon that changing all your inks will help you achieve consistent or better colour output then changing to a new fresh ink set is very easy.

Just rinse (Purge) the inks out of your existing carts and when dry refill each cart with all new PC inks, there will be no need to purchase new OEM carts, because the old carts will perform exactly the same without any issues whatsoever.

The Yello Gello can be an issue if you purge a brand new yellow cart using water first, but this is only caused when changing over from OEM ink to PC ink, and in your case you’re not so there won’t be a problem..

P.S. Some of my inks are over ten years old..

Thank you for your help. I actually wanted to have a second set of carts to facilitate faster ink changes so buying a Canon set was in the plans.

Are your old inks PC inks? That blows my theory on why I am having problems if they are.

I was having a problem with a red cast on everything and tried many solutions. By changing the PM cart, my color issues were solved for a few days. Now I have a shift to to my grays with a cast on everything using GY or LGY. I use a calibration image to understand where I am at and print it with no editing to remove the monitor and photo software from the problem solving

Having a second set of OEM carts ready to go is practically essential for maintaining good colour control, and maybe that’s where some of you colour problem are coming from.

When you refill it is important to change out any or all carts at the same time if and when the low ink warning appears on just one cart, waiting is a fools game which can lead to accumulated ink flow problems later in your carts.

Please remember you don’t lose anything by changing the carts early, but waiting for them to look empty can result in your prints going haywire, yes refilling is cheap and easy, buy it has special procedures that you must follow diligently.

By all means get another set of OEM carts new or empty, it doesn’t matter but remember to purge the yellow cart first with Windex a couple of time before introducing water in the mix. Letting Yello Gello into your print head can take ages to remove it.

Tip:- don’t mix up your Photo colours with the standard magenta and cyan colours, because that is easily done and can take quite some time for you to discover or admit to it, keep these inks separate during refilling. (They look the same inside a cart)

Yes my ink stocks are a mixture of PC inks, and most are from the old IS ink days, not the new stuff that Mike stocks now, but for constant quality output it maybe be better to update your ink stocks regularly..
