Last year i upgraded 4 computers from Windows 7 and 8.1 to Windows 10. Two desktops got 64 bit OS and two laptops got 32 bit OS. I like the free Image handling program Irfan View very much. It can handle a lot of file formats and crop and adjust images and add arrows and text to the images and much more, so it is a perfect supplement to a scanner program.

Normally I download Irfan View from its website, but this time I found out it could also be downloaded from the Microsoft App Store. A little quicker than downloading the program and plug-ins from its website and installing the program myself. I tested the installed Irfan View apps on the four computers and they seemed to work. My Epson V33 scanner worked and the other functions of the program also worked.

A month ago I tested a Canon MP 800 and also wanted to test the scanner. To my surprise I got a Twain Error message "Cannot connect to Twain device" or something similar. I checked the Canon website and noticed that the driver supported Windows up to 8.1 but not 10. Testing an MP 970 gave the same result and that driver also only supported Windows 8.1 and older. That's normally not a problem, many old Canon printers work well with drivers for an older Windows version. What was strange was that a newer printer like the MG5350 also refused to scan even if the driver supports Windows 10. Using WIA scan was possible for the Canon AIOs but that is very basic.

I suspected that the problem was caused by Windows 10, maybe the 1909 update and considered buying Vuescan that seems to support almost every scanner. A downloaded demo version worked well except for a big stamp across the scanned image. The program is 50 or 100$ depending on version, so I decided to find out why the scanner driver seemed not to work under Windows 10 neither 32 nor 64 bit.

I found a Windows 7 harddisk from one of the laptops I had upgraded to Windows 10 by doing a fresh install on another harddisk. I reinstalled the old harddisk and started the laptop with Windows 7. The old harddisk also had Irfan View installed, from download from the website. Now scanning worked again. I compared all files in the C:\Windows\twain_32\MP970series folders in Windows 7 and windows 10 both 32 and 64 bit. It looked like the files were identical, so Windows 10 was probably not the cause of the problems.

The other difference was the source of the program and the install procedure. I deleted the Irfan View 64 bit app from my main desktop and restarted and downloaded and installed the program and plug-ins from the Irfan View website. Now scanning was back to normal, the good old Canon AIOs with CCD scanners now again work with Irfan View.

I don't know what is wrong with the Irfan View App from Microsoft App Store, maybe missing plug-ins, I still recommend the program, but get it from its website, not from the Microsoft App Store.

Ink stained Fingers recommended Vuescan to me, and since using it I haven’t looked back, it’s was worth every penny..
