I just replaced the dampers in my old 4000. I got a service error guess it needs a new ribbon cable. I am thinking it may well be time to retire it.

If you have a malfunction caused by a defect ribbon cable you would need to replace it. But there is - as I remember - a counter running for the ribbon cable usage which you may reset via the maintenance mode.

My 9880 is working fine, still has 2 blank nozzles but prints great. I am thinking it's better to just give up the old 4000 and just use the 9880. I don't have many prints to make anymore and the Vivid Magenta ink set seems better to me. Might make more sense to just have one printer for everything. The service code is 000100D. I hate to give up, at this point the old ink is at a premium price too, $10.00 above the newer ink. It's referred to as a legacy printer now. I will see if I can reset the counter. Thanks for input.

If you use sheet paper you may be better off with the 4000, and you should be able to run the same vivid inks in that printer as well, you just may need other icc color profiles. A link to a service manual starting with the maintenance mode is here

You should be able to download the manual as well.
