I just acquired a PIXMA PRO-1 from a friend who bought the printer in 2013 and found out he had to buy calibration tools (ColorMunki) and use ICC profiles. That was all too much for him. I think he did not print more than 100 8x10" pictures. My problem is that the printer is reporting a full ink absorber, 8 blinks, error code 1701. I understand how to reset the counter, but I may need to replace the ink absorber container but if I need to go there, I would like to install a 'potty'. I have the service manual but I would like some suggestion how to install the ink 'potty'. In Utah the air is very dry, RH 22% average in my house, so I assume that the absorbers are dry and no ink is in the maintenance tray. I have the printer on a 55 hr 'purge' print schedule with QImage. Who can advise me how to install the ink 'potty'?

@The Image, to start with, you have a very good printer there but it did way more than 100 prints and that is reflected by the maintenance cartridge been full, so I reckon you’ll need to add another couple of zeros to the page count.

The first thing you need to do is to see if it’s possible to enter Service Mode and while there reset the ink counter and then print an EPROM repost sheet, the information on how to do this is contained within your Service Manual.

But before you start you’ll also need Service Tool V3400 to complete the process, if in deem that is possible because not all Pro 1’s can enter Service Mode and if you can’t then all the other avenues are closed to you and you must send the printer to a Service Agent.

The maintenance cartridge cannot be replace by most owners because it requires special tools to accomplish the task but that is not necessary if you can install a Printer Potty, O’ and Humidity does not affect the waste ink contents. (Electronic calculation)

P.S. Running Qimage every 55 hours is a total waste of your time, paper, ink and money, because it wastes more ink than you could ever save by just leaving the printer off, with a Printer Potty fitted this can be checked accurately and dispelled as just myth.

Please come back with any progress you have made entering Service More, because that’s the key to success.. Everything else is easy.. Sorry for putting a dampener on it..:(

Some newer Canon consumer and Pro printer models have lost access to service mode, sometimes caused by using a too old version of the service tool like v3400 or v3600. To minimize the risk of losing access to service mode I recommend buying one of the newest service tools from Ebay like version 5204 that is claimed to work with the Pro models of Canon printers.

The problem isn’t the Service Tool at all, you simply can’t access Service Mode in the first place on these Pro printers, so no Service Tool will work regardless of how new it is…
You can buy one but it still won't work.. :(

@ The Hat, Thank you for your advice. I understand that the printer processor just calculates the waste content. I do have the V3400 tool and will try to reset the counter. I saw your struggles after you installed your potty. Too bad, it is a good printer. Can you give me advice how to install the potty? One line or 2 lines? I am an engineer and have built and serviced machines for years, more metal and electronics than plastics which you have to be really careful with. I can easily make lift bars and other jigs if necessary. I appreciate your feedback.

PS. is it known how much ink is used for a cleaning cycle if the printer is not used for 60 hours?

Again where’re back at the Service Mode door, can you get your machine into Service Mode or not ?, because if you can’t the rest is pointless.

Potty installation is easy once your remember not to unintentionally disconnect wiring from any of the motherboards scattered about the inside, and been an engineer is of no help because these machines are very straight forwards but yet still electronically complex.

Now forget about cleaning the waste ink cartridge, (Not necessary) this will render the printer useless if it is not done in a Service centre, the printer has AI built in and it will trigger a shut down with this operation which renders the printer dead, and only the Service Centre has this reset software. (Costly)

The Pro 1 printer will use ink to clean when turn on or requested to print, and at each start up is calculated in waste ink, it amounts to a tidy sum x 12 cartridges, but if left off for more than 60 hours the amount of ink used on start-up can be as much as half the amount wasted in the same time period.

The PDF will explain everything in photo detain..

P.S. the only struggle I had was with the Service Centre.. Sons O.B , best describes them all… Also you can't get a replacement waste ink cartridge...

@The Hat, sorry for the late response. I was out on a photo shoot for over a week. The reset worked like a charm. The service report does say that only between 50 - 100 sheets were processed. I was able to get into the service mode and reset the counter. Next job is to have some time to install the potty. I appreciate your help with your comments and sending me the instructions. Thank you.
