Not to reignite the Perpetual Epson-Canon Pissing Contest, but in the many years on this forum, I often see issues with Epson that I don't with Canon. Maybe I'm just biased and am blind to Canon issues?

Over the 25? years I've been in computers and printers and later scanners, I now don't even bother to look at anything other than Canon. OK, look, yes, buy, no. My forays into Epson-land were quite unhappy. The first was a photo printer ca. 2002. Sucked ink and the cartridge carriage banged from side to side. Years later, a different Epson printer, my daughter found the same faults. Bzzzzzt..............

About a dozen years ago I needed a scanner that could do 4x5" negatives and transparencies. I bought something used on eBay, it did what I needed, but oy vey, the software! Head bangingly not intuitive (at least for me!) and there was something that I had to reset for every single image, IIRC.

Sold both as fast as I could.

And then there's the matter of my easy to fill BJ/CLI-8/CLI-42 cartridges. Long may you run.

Coincidentally, just a few days ago I came across an extensive review of my 8800F scanner. They said that the Canon Scangear was by far the easiest to use and with the best options over every other brand, HP was close, Epson was.............. Bzzzzzzt..................

My most used scanner by many factors over is my Canon Lide 600F. Super light weight, small, runs on just the USB port, scans films and negs, even. I don't think Epson ever made something like this. And, to be fair, I don't think Canon does anymore, either.

Like my ip4500, I have a backup of that scanner, too. I also have a PRO-1000, and 8800F and 9950F scanners.

I stick with what works! Granted, YMMV.

Just on this particular point... I found that with some earlier Epson printers, particularly the C84, C86 series, the ribbon cable that attached to the position sensor located at the back of the printhead, could be pulled loose by poorly installed CIS system tubes or just work loose over time. This disconnection effectively blinded the printhead to it's horizontal position across the width of the printer as it had no sanity check to determine whether the sensor board was connected or not. Instead the printhead would slam left and right until the printers logic decided something was wrong and give a general error. Since then the printhead design has long since updated to cover and protect this connection so you rarely see it anymore.

Figured you might want to know what might have been up with it.
