Pro 10s Red Ink

Hello.

Did I read somewhere that you can buy another 'larger' Canon red cartridge to drain and use the ink in the Pro 10? Could anyone tell me the Canon cartridge number?

I have no idea if you read about a larger red cartridge somewhere, I do not know either, but if you do find one then let us know.

AFAIK the red ink of the Pro10/10s is used only for these printers. Models with bigger cartridges, as the Pro1000 and above, use a different red ink. Of course, nobody forbids you to extract ink from those huge carts and refill your PGI-72 red but, at the very least, you’d need a custom profile to correct the different shade of the ink. At worst, you might face incompatibility problems (different viscosity or something..).

If you want to play safe and save money, do as myself and buy from Precision Colors Canon OEM red ink for the Pro10. A two oz. bottle ( enough for 4 refills ) costs roughly the same than two Canon PGI-72 carts. You save even more if you live in the USA, because shipping is cheaper.

I do not think PC's Red is OEM. No where on his site does it claim this. In fact, he makes it clear to use a Canon OEM Red cartridge for images relying on more saturated reds for best effect and then switching to a cartridge refilled with his aftermarket Red for everything else (if you find the results acceptable).

Mike does sell OEM red ink, but is very cautious about it for very good reasons, he cannibalises the large OEM carts...

So, if he might extract ink from larger carts (not saying that he actually does ..) that means that those larger carts use indeed the same red of the PGI-72R. I stand corrected if this is true, but then the question is: what cartridges ? ( This is an instance where private mail comes useful ).

Checking now PCs website, I see that Mike stopped shipping outside North America for logistic reasons. Luckily enough, my last order of three weeks ago was just before the change of policy,

What "larger" cartridges of PGI-72R ink? Do you see any when you search the internet? I did not in my very brief search on Google.

Unless you can find OEM Canon PGI-72R in an XL or some other larger size, then the ink is not OEM Red PGI-72 as you infer.

First find these larger OEM cartridges before making your supposition.

Mikling has made it clear in previous posts that the quality of aftermarket ink replacements for OEM PGI-72 Red are underwhelming where reds predominate or are critical to the image. If he could essentially replicate the quality, or make a custom ICC that compensated for the color shift, he would have and not recommended use of OEM ink over his own as that is not a good business plan.

There is no magic ink other than OEM in this situation at this time. If you are OK with the results of the aftermarket Red, or a non PGI-72 Red ink from whatever source (which can have its own pitfalls), then all is well.
