WF 3640 new firmware update

I purchased the 3640 as I needed a printer sooner than later for my daughter/family printing - my 610 stop printing for me. What I did not like is that I did a wireless install and the printer did a firmware update on me - dam it. I turned off the auto update in the printer, just hope it's not too late. Does anyone know if the update will be a problem child for me? I plan to purchase some ink and carts from PC and hope it won't be all for nothing. Are the PC carts OEM?

I just ran the updater on an older WF3640 I have (had CB29G7 20.A5, now has CB20GC 20.A5) which I think is current. All my refillable carts still work. The PC refillable carts (as well as 2 other types I've purchased) will produce a nag screen the first time you print (per computer) after loading them. Looks like the update bumped the root certificate version to 1.01 (among possibly other things).

For ease of maintenance, I recommend doing the switch to dye inks after the starters are finished. Of the three WF-3640s and one WF-3620 I've purchased, half have some printhead issues that I haven't fixed. It takes about 5 full pages of a color to clear out the ink from C/M/Y, and about 10 full pages to clear black. Also, Vermont Photo Inkjet's Piezoflush works fine in the printer.

Thanks for the information. I had already ordered the refill kit planning to see if it still works and if not I'd given the printer to my parents and purchased another one. This printer will get heavy use as the family use it for printing everything. I hope that keeps the heads working smoothly.

Update: I just replaced 2 cartridges today and all is good. So, I can confirm that the new update did not affect refilling.

As an update on my end: I recently inherited my Dad's old 3640 with refill carts. In my haste for playing with the new(-to-me) toy I mistakenly updated the Firmware to CB09I2. Released on Feb 9th 2018.

I am now stuck on all my carts not being 'recognized'…

I am onto my google-fu on trying to make this printer work again…without having to purchase newer carts. Just wanted to update those whom come across this thread.

Firmware updates on Epson printers - that's the trap you get into when you leave update options in the driver on, cartridges are a kind of date coded - with a manufacturing date, and Epson is blocking cartridges outside a particular time window which gets updated and moved with such a firmware update.
You may use a utility 'WicReset' which offers the function of a firmware downgrade for most Epson printers including yours but that service is not free, you need to buy a key to activate that function.

Yeah, turn that auto update off. There's a youtube video out there that describes the process.

Turning auto update off is one action but won't let you use your current cartridges, you would need to restore an older firmware version with WicReset to do so.

I have learned my lesson about updating firmwares…

As for WIC resetting, I have the app, but I need to find the $$ to make the downgrade happen. Maybe this next check…

But in the meantime, I was actually able to dig up a previous version of the firmware online. While it seems legit, I am now stuck on figuring out on how to make the 'grade happen without spending $$…

…of course, the app won't allow me to just downgrade from the newer version. Yes, it is an actual EPSON installer.
