ok a new printhead for a workforce 615 is over $100.00 a used 615 printer with a good printhead is 50.00 but is it worth taking a chance that the head may die soon, or do these heads have a very long life to them

You should be ok with an Epson... I've abused my Epson printers for years with all sorts of clogs, flushing, etc... and the only real problem I've ever really had is overpressuring the head (I did it deliberately to confirm what happens) and it delaminated the head (ie: pressure couldn't shift the clog so it forced apart the printhead itself).
Canons are a lot more sensitive due to the way they eject the ink (ie: boil tiny amounts) so if you're thinking is taking Canon experience into account, it's less relevant.
