Any ideas what solvent I might be able to use to clean a clogged print head on a Brothers MFC-5440CN -- specifically the Yellow cartridge.

I know there are cleaning cartridges out there for the Brothers L41-BK (Black) cartridge that you just put into the printer in lieu of the regular ink cartridge. No one seems to make the same thing for colored cartridges though.

I'm thinking of taking a nearly empty yellow cartridge and filling it with some solvent and trying the same thing -- but have no idea what solvent to use other than isopropyl alcohol diluted with a bit of water.

Help, please!!

I made an LC-41BK cleaning cartridge for my 5440cn with a 50/50 mix of refill ink and the solvent we soak print heads in at work. Smells like isopropanol and ammonia. I'll try and dig up an MSDS tomorrow when I'm at work.

Thanks, I'll stay tuned for further info!!

I pulled the MSDS.

The product is called WJ-800 and is available from Image Specialists (click link and scroll down a bit).

To make the cleaning cart:

Cut the tip of a 20mL syriniger like this

(dig my ascii art!)
Mix WJ-800 and ink in a small container.
Holding the cartridge upside down with a spring clamp, suck the air out of the cartridge 3 or 4 times with the syringe (stick it in the ink port, pull the plunger and tip the syringe over 30-45* then withdraw).
Fill the syringe with the cleaning/ink solution and stick it in the ink port, then lean it over and the ink should suck into the cartridge.

Install the cartridge and print several pages of solid colour. Then try a print test with a non-cleaning cart.

Good luck!
