Purging canon cl520/1 cartridges prior to filling

Hi everyone

This is probably a post that appears in a lot of places but as I'm just about to take my first trepidacious steps into the arcane world of refilling I need to get a few things straight in my head.

I will certainly be asking more refilling questions, so brace yourselves.

I have bought a bag of OEM Canon 520/1 cartridges from ebay and not knowing how old they are, is it a good idea to purge them before refilling for the first time?

In this bagful I am missing an ordinary black and a grey but as there is 4 each of CMY (which is more than I have chips) I was thinking that I could use a purged yellow for the grey and a cyan for the black.

So, compadres, does this sound like a plan to you?

Can you tell me the best way to purge said cartridges, do I use just ordinary tap water or distilled?
I have also read on here that some people 'condition' their sponges with and additive, what would that be and is it necessary?

I plan to try top filling, what is the best way to remove the small ball bearing without damaging the cartridge.

Can you tell me the best way to purge said cartridges, do I use just ordinary tap water or distilled?

I only use plain tap water so do most guys but some also finish off with a quick rinse in distilled water just to be sure.

With the refill ball successfully removed just turn the cartridge upside down and let the tap water just dribble slowly onto the outlet hole
and it will clear out all of the old ink after a while, there are many other ways also but this is by far the easiest.

I have also read on here that some people 'condition' their sponges with and additive, what would that be and is it necessary?

my preferred way to dry a cartridge is to hold the hose from a vacuum cleaner to the exit port on the cartridge, fast and easy you don't need to worry about the size of the hose just place your finger over the excess opening you can control the amount of suction this way
