Printer cartridge compatibility

I've recently bought an XP-2200 printer that uses 604 type cartridges, to replace my old XP-442 that has come to the end of its life. This latter printer uses type 29 cartridges. My question is, are these interchangeable? i.e. can I uses type 29 in the XP-2200 printer? Visually they appear identical but I realise that's 'what's inside' that matters.

If you have cartridges available, you could always try it, yet my understanding is that they may look the same and "may" insert, yet the electrical connections are not exact and connect to the wrong signals if you use the wrong one. I suspect the printer would indicate it could not connect to the cartridge properly.
Note - I do not know anything about the compatibility of the inks in each, and am only pointing out the likely electrical issues.
