    1) For the engine behind it to run into and cause a Hollywood-quality fiery explosion.

    2) Where the nuclear waste is secretly stored during transportation.

    3) To get that juice up to Lawson's in 40 hours. (Might have to be a Clevelander to remember this though I read they are still in Asia!)

    That's an auxiliary tender. The old water sources for steam engine replenishment are not as available as they once were, due to conversion to diesel electric locomotives.

    Thanks turbguy, the fact that it is placed where it is, between two power sources and although out of picture to the left it looks as though there is a second similar car, gives a hint, but not the underlying reason!

    The Flying Scotsman would use 15,000 gallons of water on the Edinburgh run and it’s no where near as big as these 844’s are, but it scooped up the water it needed from special troughs along the route..
    In Ireland we’d just leave the Feckin windows open..
