I might be doing something wrong, but as near as I can tell, I don't need to choose to get notification of new comments. When I start a new thread, below it there are two boxes already checked, asking to be notified when I receive a comment.
It's been a while since I've posted a new question here, perhaps I'm forgetting something somewhere to request to be notified. Usually I'd get an email notifying me of a comment.
