I have this identical problem. I wound up knocking the cartridge silly against a hard surface (making sure not to mess with the sensors) and shaking the heck out of it over a white piece of paper until some black ink came out. THEN it worked. Photos still look fuzzy, though. And I'm almost out of color ink thanks to spending the afternoon trying to figure out why all the photos were printing so faintly. All after one day.
I gave up on Epsons because they gobbled up ink faster than I could (expensively) replace the cartridges. So far, the Canon is making Epson look a bit better to me.
