Tried MIS in my i9900 and got banding using icc profiles in cs2 and not good color match, switch back to oem and thing look great. I like refilling, what are some of my ink options? I print mostly street shots on matt paper(Red River Polar or EEM) some luster on Ilford.

Thanks for your advice

Graywolf,

The first problem to solve is the banding. Have you done a head alignment recently? What does your nozzle check look like? Can you post a high resolution sample of the problem (say 600x600 pixels)? See http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=36 for instructions on posting images.

Once you solve the banding problem, you should be able to correct the color problem with a custom ICC profile (Cathy's Profiles or Dry Creek Photo). You have already spent more than the cost of a custom profile on the MIS ink, and this would allow you to use the 8 bottles of ink that you already have (I trust that you aren't mixing inks from different sources). Ideally you should get a separate profile for each paper, but you may be able to get a single profile for your main paper and use the color adjustments in the driver to compensate for the differences in the other papers.

Did you buy bulk ink from MIS or their prefilled carts? Last time I checked, their prefilled carts were not filled with MIS inks. Sounds like one or more of the aftermarket carts (or carts you prefilled) aren't functioning properly. The reason I think so is that replacing them with OEM carts solves the problem. A nozzle check with the refilled carts in place (after printing a purge file) may show you which cart is not printing properly. Sometimes, however, the nozzle check will look ok because the cart will deliver ink for a very short run but not for the entire print. If I get what looks like a normal nozzle printout and still have banding, I print the nozzle check and a purge page on coated paper so that the ink doesn't sink into the paper and obscure the problem. Banding indicates inadequate feed of one or more carts, and the colors will also shift as a result of a cart not feeding properly. I use MIS bulk inks in my i960 printers and they have performed well.

If you find that a cart isn't working properly, reevaluate your refilling technique, the state of the carts you used before refilling, etc.

By all means, send a scan so Granddad can evaluate it. He is great at diagnosing these problems!

Thanks for responce, Nozzle checks looked good, I also have a i960 and replaced its carts with the ones that were in the i9900 and the i960 prints fine. These were oem carts that I refilled with MIS bulk ink.

Grandad35, I can not send prints or pics, they have all gone in the trash. thanks for your help

Mike,

The first few refills in a prefilled cart are "special" in that the ink in the sponge will be a mixture of the original ink and the refilled ink. It has been reported that some ink combinations can be incompatible and tend to clog the sponge and filter (which would cause banding). Even if the mixture doesn't cause banding problems, it will surely affect the colors - the colors will continue to change for the first few refills until the original ink is so dilute that it doesn't affect the color.

If you are fussy about your colors, I recommend completely purging the carts of all previous ink before the first refill - see (http://www.nifty-stuff.com/docs/canon-BCI-6-cartridges.php) for one such method.

Switching the carts to the i960 probably clears the CMYKpMpC carts as the cause of the problem but not the red or green.

MIS is NOT a BRAND of ink. It is a store label. Most of the time the vendor you choose is ink republic. They sell 2 different UNBRANDED inks that I am aware of, whatever they use in their prefilled carts and whatever they use in their refill bottles.

Each time you buy from them you may not get the same thing you got before since they may change their suppliers for (usually economic reasons) at any time. They do not disclose what they are selling you so you will not be able to track the quality with other users.

It is best to pay more and get the consistency of Canon OEM inks as you are finding out.

This change in ink also happened with another vendor who failed to test changes their supplier made in ink. Luckily this change did not damage anyones printer but did screw up their photos and wasted their time.

Have a nice day. :=
