According to Canon's service literature (for the ip4500 which is basically the same unit), the printhead should not be stored in the printer and the carriage should be in the "Home" position (middle of the printer slide rail).
Reading further in the manual, under "Special Notes On Servicing" (for transporting) it states to "keep the print head & ink tanks installed in the carriage".
Transporting & storage are two different things, but shouldn't the 'Purge unit' be covered to keep those sponges moist and from drying out?? When the carriage is parked centered (with the top lid open), you can clearly see the sponges exposed.
