I'm a poor typist, and hate monospaced Courier text, so when I bought my Compuadd 286 pc and discovered HP's first Deskjet (in 1988?) I was very excited. 
( It was slow, mono, and cost an arm and a leg [£600-800] , plus extra for the font cartridges!!)
I've had a few since then, with Canon being favourite recently, despite a suspicion they have built-in obsolescence.
I gave up on refilling a long time ago as for me it never was very successful. YMMV.
I can't remember the last time I bought a Canon branded ink cart. Cheap compatibles work for me, maybe I'm lucky that way.
I like photography, DTP, music, cars, walks, dogs, cats, but most of all not wasting, and saving the planet. It's the only one we've got, and the prospects aren't good. There, I said it.
