I'm trying to get hold of an IP4500 but they are a bit difficult to find. Will I notice the difference between prints from this and the IP3500 (which I can find). Print sizes of 7 * 5 and 8 * 10.

If you saw the same printout from both printers in isolation, you would probably be very happy with either one. Comparing side by side, you might see an improvement with the iP4500.

I find the difference to be striking in photos with dark areas. The inability of the ip3500 to produce true black makes it an inferior printer for photos, unless you are determined to only print photos taken in bright areas!

Yes, panos is right, if you are printing on photo paper (as opposed to plain paper), you don't want any of the iP3XXX series. The iP3XXX series are ideal for people who print only on plain paper.
