@admin: by mistake I posted two threads. I apologise. Please delete this one as I can't find a way to delete it myself. Thank you very much!

Dear all,

Today Canon made me the surprise: Error 1401.
Cartridges don't work anymore.
I suspect there was a firmware update. (I wasn't aware I should disable automatic updates as a preventive measure).

Currently it reports firmware v4.000
On the printer itself I can't enter any menus, the screen is just swowing error 1401 on both cartridges continuously
Does anyone know a way to downgrade the firmware please? And from where could I get old firmware versions?
No matter how complicated the matter would be, please post it if you happen to know any way to do it.

Many thanks!

If I get you right, you use compatible cartridges. Now you suspect that a new firmware was automatically installed and that new version bans the use of third party products in on your printer, giving error 1401 ?. This is possible of course but, in theory, error 1401 means 'printhead not recognized' ( i.e. faulty ). I doubt that this issue has anything to do with firmware updates.
To dispel the doubts you should install a set of OEM carts. Not a cheap option but you'd know where is the problem.
If the printhead is busted, OEM carts won't fix the issue and downgrading the firmware would be pointless. You'd need either a new printhead or a new printer.
In the unlikely chance that OEM carts clear error 1401 then you could try a firmware downgrade ( or keep using OEM carts).
Canon doesn't allows users to downgrade the firmware, it would be against their interest. You should use third party software to reflash the EEPROM of your printer, after locating a copy of the former version.
Sorry but I know nothing about reflashing. Other members here with more knowledge of these questions may help you better.

I suspect there was a firmware update.
These are a two cart system with the built in print head, so new carts will solve the problem, or last ditch attempt try cleaning the cart contacts with an eraser..

This is not a firmware issue..

@admin: by mistake I posted two threads. I apologise. Please delete this one as I can't find a way to delete it myself.
A discussion has already begun on the mirror thread OP intended to keep.

https://www.printerknowledge.com/threads/how-to-downgrade-firmware-on-canon-pixma-mx495.15140/

It is unfortunate that OP did not delete the rest of his words here so as not to confuse other members this might be the active thread when it is not. Now we have a split posting which is a disservice to all.

@Support - please fix this mess.

Oops, I didn't realize that the MX495 is a printer that uses cartridges with a built-in printhead. Forget my former post. @The Hat is right, new carts/printheads will solve the issue.
