I find the HP 900 series to be near indestructible.
If you can find one in a garage sale and it still has the three little plastic tits that impel the sheet forward after printing, it's worth the $5 that the poor sap is letting it go for.
As a bonus if it still has the carts - even when empty - they can still go in the rotation to reset the counter.

Canon is really the best out of the 3 major brand names. This is based on the fact that Canon printers have the highest number of nozzles on their print heads. This is essential for high quality text and photo printing. Canon printers all can be easily refilled. But somehow Americans mostly think if the brand name is HP it is good. This is very wrong. Just think about their 5 cc ink cartridges. It is made for only one purpose, to rip off customers. Printers that ended up in the landfill are mostly HP printers.
