Banding is not caused by problems with ink/paper compatibility but is caused by clogged print head nozzles. If cleaning the print head from the printer maintenance doesn't help then pressing the print head a few times against a piece of soft tissue paper moistened with Windex or similar might help.
Most non OEM 78 cartridges are HP cartridges that have been cleaned and refilled. But I have seen type 78 cartridge that was not made by HP. I don't know if it is possible to find another brand of remanufactured or aftermarket cartridges, as the printer is now 15 years old or older?
